Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

FIRST MAN (2018) does a great job of portraying the danger and terror of this. Panels rattling, alarms beeping, you get the sense it could all go sideways. It was misjudged and poorly promoted at release but it's really a movie about death, and how close Armstrong was to it for most of his life.

I will honor his choice.
A former Marvel EiC told me that any time spent inking was time I could have spent learning how to be a better penciller. Makes sense in a vacuum but it was horrible advice in terms of how the industry was already operating by the early 2000's.

Storyboard artists, often closest and most integral to realizing a director's vision, are a relatively cheap part of the process. Often their role is disparaged, or not even understood. And yet one of the main goals of AI in film production seems to be to replicate what they do.

It becomes increasingly difficult to comment on politics when all one side cares about is an idiot who made it to the ticket through very real and specific national conditions, and is willing to defend him to the point of irrationality; and the other side who wishes those conditions didn't exist.
