Today in nominative determinism, there's a Hazardville, CT that I pass on I-91 and I've always wanted to know what the deal was there. Yesterday I find out that Hazardville used to be the site of the Hazard Powder Company, a major gunpowder and explosives manufacturer in the 19th century.
Had to drop Noah off at the bus station at 5am this morning, which was an excellent excuse to log some early morning studio time and dance to "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone" while making zines. Reprinting various "memento mori" things for the swiftly approaching fall.
This post contains several thoughtful threads, and great conversation about how people can talk past each other because of misunderstood professional standards (on multiple sides), lack of context etc. I'm also very sorry to have posted without understanding the full picture.

What bugs me is how we as a comics community failed to defend not only Tillie but our art form. Including some prominent names who should have damn well known better. Very, very disappointing. If you haven't noticed, comics are under attack these days from many directions. We need to do better.

i know when i sneakily steal someone's book to create an unauthorized and uncredited adaptation i always make sure to write "It is not possible for me to overstate how important Rachel Hope Cleves’ book on the subject was" and point readers "towards our Holy Mother of knowledge Rachel Hope Cleves"

One of the (many) things that's depressed me about this whole situation regarding Charity and Sylvia is that Tillie's book is a masterpiece of comics work. @thene.bsky.social articulates it beautifully here. Tillie's book is beautiful, it's staggering, it absolutely stands on its own.
Deep dive into this bizarre controversy. I appreciate the close attention involved in this piece and it's more general conclusion: "But who even cares about facts or evidence when you’ve got a good grievance fantasy to ride? Just join the pile-on. It’s a lot easier than reading books."

God, it's so devasting to watch the games industry be obliterated. Month after month, more layoffs, more gutting, more scrapping, more greed.
The controversy over the Charity & Sylvia GNs has raised many issues about historical research and how non fiction GNs should handle citations, but the idea that it is a "rip off" is grossly unfair to Tillie Walden. I picked up a galley at ALA and this is 250 pages of densely reimagined storytelling
Sticking my nose into this to say that having heard Tillie speak publicly about the book multiple times, she openly acknowledges that Cleves' biography was a foundational text, and has dedicated an entire website www.charityandsylvia.com to a bibliography citing hers and Cleves' research.
