🎮 programmer @ Evening Star talk to me about volleyball, language learning, one piece tcg, or cycling. if you don't then i'll probably start talking to you about one of them lol 📍chicago
Honestly I've been MIA in local game dev stuff since the pandemic and in recent years my relationship w/ game dev went from a core part of my identity to 'this is just my job' @indiecitygames.org threw one hell of an event with CIGS and it reminded me why I started doing it all in the first place.
picoCAD 2 is a tiny modeler for tiny models * build low poly models * texture with built in pixel art editor * animate! Have you already tried it?
apparently before they did this they threatened the team as well?? the fuck??
Millennium math problem solved by OpenAI may have "regurgitated" competitors unpublished work... also they spent more than $22 million in computing power in one week to scoop them. techcrunch.com/2026/09/08/o...
hello I am modern aaa game designer. the shareholders told me to make the game longer. I do not wish to make the game longer. they told me to make the game longer or I lose job. I make the player collect 6 potatoes for 5% damage resistance. The shareholders are happy. I've been laid off.
yeah sure whatever, let lara croft cook potato stew on her phone for 2m0s of damage resistance who gives a shit anymore
i like typing my little code. i like thinking about it and solving little problems to solve bigger problems. if it is ever the case where my only options for software engineering are to become an AI code-review churner i'll probably just go work at a bike shop.
Years ago I was at the space museum in White Sands, NM, gazing up at a Saturn V rocket engine. Another visitor next to me turned out to be an engineer from JPL. He explained they were studying old rockets to try to reverse engineer how they actually worked. Because the blueprints had been lost.

AI companies are trying to create nozick's experience machine and a frighteningly large number of people seem to think this is an unambiguous good
Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I think it's fine for games not to really have economies
Tim Sweeney says only hope for new games is to 'connect to economies of other games'
Played in the Peoria Regional and Sunday Treasure Cup this weekend for One Piece. Didn’t do great in the main event but got top 64 in the Treasure Cup running Sengoku! Managed to come away with a Nami 🎉
the year is 2027 you wake up and see the latest releases on poob. a live action adaptation of undertale but the script was written by andy weir and papyrus is played by ryan reynolds
Genuinely, this concern about AI is one of the reasons why I think having friction in video games is good and why it's increasingly important to have games that simply exist instead of catering to our expectations. Reposting this message from Kojima about "pre-digested" art:
“The Al is not just telling you what you want to hear. It is training you, one conversation at a time, to need less friction, expect more agreement, and become slightly less capable of handling a situation where someone pushes back on you”
My other takeaway is that I might finally actually like coffee but I’m not ready to admit or entertain this thought yet
My takeaway from going to Toronto last weekend is realizing it felt like if Chicago had NYC zoning laws
lol Nvidia basically pushed Capcom in front of a bus to sell their AI resolution upslopper
Good news everyone, Capcom and various other developers were just as caught off guard by that DLSS 5 bullshit as the rest of us, we can direct all our ire at Nvidia! www.polygon.com/resident-evi...
This has been the reason I’ve been so burnt out on making games in recent years. The mantra I go by now when it comes to work is Process over Output. You will not cross the finish line unscathed if this goes unaddressed
I think most game dev teams underestimate how damaging slow workflows are to the ultimate quality of their game. If it takes 5 minutes to launch the game and see your changes, I think your game is going to be MUCH worse than the alternate timeline where it took 1 minute
Love when you put your laptop to sleep and THEN the fans turn on. We've really done a great job with computers.
So I haven’t talked much about work stuff in a while but 2026 is kicking off with some big changes: I’m hanging up my freelancing towel and joining the team at Evening Star! 💫
Just gonna say this again for games sphere cus we get the same question: Networking doesn't mean schmoozing up to famous people, it means making friends with your peers. Then in 10 years, 20, one of you might be famous? And sure you're still helping each other cus well yeah friends. Make. Friends.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
glad to hear the kids are sick of renting everything in their lives buy a PSP. buy a Game Boy. A Walkman. collect the UMDs, tapes, carts, or hack the shit out of it and download roms. add a backlight. no one owns it but you. it can play movies, it can play MP3s. shit used to be functional
Why do Gen Z have a growing appetite for retro tech?
Officially started on this 😤 aiming to have the basic setup to share in the next week or two!
Been having a lot of fun making simple custom FMOD DSP effects. I think it's all finally starting to click- considering making a little open source fmod plugin page as I learn more
