Art theory has spent decades describing the aura of the artwork. But describing the experience isn't the same as explaining the psychological machinery that produces it. Why does the aura seem to radiate from the object itself? Hagioptasia may provide the missing explanation.

Following the recent good weather now is a good time to take stock of butterfly sightings in Norfolk. Brimstone and Commas being the most numerous, Peacocks Red Admirals and Small Tortoiseshell have also been seen. 2 species to add to the 2025 list were see on March 8th, Small White & Specked Wood.
This is Macrocillix maia & he's a moth who mimics bird poo. But he's taken it to the next level, he's also mimicking flies feeding on the bird poo, right down to the shimmer of their wings! I have wanted to see one for so long, but never thought I would! In Trus Madi entomology camp in Borneo. 1/2
What a start to the year for those finding Large Tortoiseshells in Kent! Its eggs are brown, since they're laid on bark, rather than the green of Nettle-feeders. I was also lucky enough to be in the company of @wlangdon12.bsky.social and Matthew Oates when Will found larvae on Portland (below)!
The best by far today: two or three LARGE TORTOISESHELL butterflies in Birchett Wood between Shadoxhurst and Hamstreet today.
