🧵On @thenewsagents.co.uk yesterday, school closures and the lab leak theory were offered as two examples of legitimate questions that were hard to ask. Both have in fact been asked constantly since 2020. But here's a thread on why I think they were wrong and dangerous on school closures 1/12
This has really pissed me off, if you're in the area and can afford it go and give the cafe owner some money to help fund the kids meals. And if he refuses buy yourself a nice coffee and tip him as much as you can. Fuck Reform taking food from kids in need. www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

One of the worst things about the Senate’s attempted Fauci show trial is how the supposed evidence against him is early in COVID he considered multiple hypotheses, then increasingly ruled some unlikely as evidence came in. The objection is he did science. Fundamentally that is what’s under attack.
I see we're at the "Yes it's real, but there's no point doing anything about it *now*, just live with it" stage of climate change opinion pieces.

It’s exhausting. For years, decades, right wing media have lied and told us #climate breakdown was just woke nonsense. Now, it’s whoopsies, yes it’s real, but relax everyone & enjoy our new “Mediterranean” climate as Europe goes up in flames around us.

Hey @royalsociety.org, this is your esteemed Fellow. This is who you have chosen to represent the Society as an ambassador. Through your silence at his atrocities, you endorse his behaviour. Indeed you raise his values as your own. Racism, white supremacy, murder, fascism etc. This is your legacy.

As someone who taught GNVQ Science, IT and even a bit of Health and Social Care in the late 90's, this is exactly the cycle.
I fear for what I call The Inevitable Doom Loop of Vocational Education: - it starts off hard to get parity of esteem - loads of kids fail - it’s made easier - it’s seen as a doss and schools lump kids in to game outcomes - numbers drop - it gets cancelled

Grim. "We don't have time to reject you properly. Please paste this prompt into your AI of choice to complete the rejection process"
Fucking hell as if receiving automated rejection letters for jobs wasn't bad enough.
I’m also sure loads of PGCE places will be available next year to get enough QTS-trained specialists for this and it won’t just be given to random teachers with spare timetable slots.
Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ve thought through how this will be staffed, funded, and the class size implications for GCSE options. They learned that from the last time, right? RIGHT? www.tes.com/magazine/new...
Terrible news. Aside from learning more about the universe, we're not going to get much economic growth by cutting science funding. (If only we had a Prime Minister who was interested in supporting the north, and Manchester in particular, who could stop this.) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

When the story of why humanity didn't stop climate change is written, it will feature front pages like this. Even as the skies blacken with climate change-induced wildfires, right wing media continue their relentless crusade against measures to tackle it.
Rowling looming over a progressive Irish cultural festival with her menacing insinuations & a phalanx of expensive lawyers dashing off legal letters. And all because the organisers don’t want transphobes peddling hate at their event. A nauseating spectacle of spite.
