an unfathomable amount of stuff has got better over the last 40 years - hell, even over the *last 15* - and anyone convinced it hasn't does not remember or know what things were like 15 or 40 years ago.

To be fair, “Councillors and council elections don’t matter” are a load-bearing part of the “Kemi Badenoch is doing well and the Conservative party’s prospects under her are looking good” thesis.

Amused at Kemi Badenoch telling radio 4 it's fine to select a former neo nazi as a local councillor because he's just dealing with 'bins' etc but that she has a higher threshold when it comes to selecting MPs. Which is why, I presume, she turned down Grant Shapps??
Aged 21 in my first 'proper' job I worked with a guy who although nice always seemed so miserable. Sardonic really. A few months in asked colleagues 'what's his problem'. His wife and daughter were killed by a dangerous driver years earlier...so yeah pay your fine and stfu about how unfair it is

I do now: I wouldn’t have posted if I'd known. I’ve seen death of difficult people up close (and its impact on others): that’s the only reason it was on my mind as an issue.
In my dad’s lifetime around 70,000 people died because of bombs dropped on the UK in 1939-45. In my lifetime 3,000 died as a result of civil conflict over the borders of the UK. I think a few boats of impoverished and desperate people who want a better life isn’t quite in the same league.
This is the literal definition of terrorism.

That a former neo Nazi is welcome in the Badenoch led Tory party but Shapps and Gavin Barwell aren't speaks volumes. It's baffling that Badenoch cannot recognise that the obvious path to power depends on moderate centre right voters.

Astonishing that JB, who has dedicated her life to campaigning against gender-based violence and the exploitation of women, should have a good word to say for a man who hit his girlfriend and joked about sleeping with teenage girls, simply because he happened to agree with her on That One Issue.

It’s a low bar but I am delighted to see this. The UK has had four widespread instances of extreme heat this year. The national May temperature record was broken at 35.1°C in West London, and June bringing temperatures above 37°C in East Anglia.
Yes it was a long time ago but it was totally inappropriate that the beeb allowed him to walk straight out of editing the Sport "newspapers" into a broadcasting job with them. Especially on a news station.

If I wanted to protect the most prestigious and highly paid jobs for the social groups who usually hold them I'd probably design an education system that discouraged poorer children from studying the entry qualifications for these jobs as early as possible..
If it helps Labour people to know this I think most 'middle class' people don't 'look down' on plumbers or builders or electricians they think 'thank god I've found a competent tradesperson who can sort my problem out for me'. Think there's a bit of inverted snobbery going on here tbh.
