AAUP says the Trump admin is going after universities, & today WSJ says “White House to Redirect Billions in Research Funds Toward AI, Away From Colleges.” Ppl have asked me why Project 2025 and the Trumpist right want to kill US science. This is why: like Orban, they want to kill universities.

OUT TODAY, the AAUP just released the first comprehensive account of how the Trump administration has taken the same playbook it's used on law firms & foreign governments & turned it on American universities. US higher ed has, in effect, become a target of a massive extortion racket. 🧵

Anthropic has just been ordered to pay 1.5 billion dollars to copyright holders. But the harm is ongoing. They aren’t stopping societal wide copyright violation. So people have in effect been forced to issue licences against their will.

just got an email from my (former) chair that the university has acted & the state has approved the formal closure of my department. this was done without any faculty input on the decision or the process, & has ended a vibrant, growing (!), humanities department that won teaching and research awards

Anyway, happy Monday! The Dean is shutting down my department - Religion & Culture, the only 1 of is kind in the country & home to the innovative Major in Humanities for Public Service. There is no immediate budgetary or political pressure for this decision

As for grades, here's my pedagogy: I want every student to get an A, because I grade based on the work they put in & do, the skills they practice & strengthen. Who the fuck doesn't want every student in their courses to succeed? & who is anyone else to tell me what grades students should be getting?

My pedagogy: I'm not interested in trying to catch students "cheating"; I'm not a cop, it doesn't affect me negatively, & since I don't "distribute" grades it doesn't affect that either. The reason I'm so opposed to AI use is that it cheats the students themselves & every part of their experience.

Scholarly folks who have ever received federal funding: today is the deadline for public comment on proposed revisions that will decimate our national research capacity and replace expertise with political whim. Please consider throwing in your 2¢. See below for some useful links and encouragement.

Today, July 10, marks one year since the brutal and chaotic immigration raid by the US DHS on Glass House Farms in Ventura County, CA which resulted in more than 300 farm workers detained by federal agents and the violent death of farm worker Jaime Alanis Garcia. 1/

This bizarre @newrepublic.com piece accuses me of being a proponent of American exceptionalism and someone who refuses to challenge the basic myths of American history and, uh, that is certainly a take?
