Imagine being this joyless. Humans have been playing games for thousands of years!

The ESA is a lobbying group for game *corporations*. They absolutely do not represent game workers.
btw if the ESA or any of these studios wanted to put together an initiative to provide financial relief to laid off game workers, they have ~$60M in total assets that they could allocate towards one. They're welcome to reach out to me if they need info on how to set one up.
🎉 IT'S LIVE 🎉 The game industry hardship fund itch bundle made in partnership with @necrosoftgames.com is HERE. Over 100 games for $10+ bucks: all funds (save for itch fees) go directly to the UVW-CWA Game Worker Hardship Fund. GOOD GAMES FOR A GOOD CAUSE👇 itch.io/b/3802/game-...

the stuff I work on outside my 9-5 is no one's business but my own and they're big mad because they can't sell it :^)
NEW: I spoke with multiple video game developers and a U.S. employment lawyer to learn more about restrictive side clauses that often prevent employees at major companies from pursuing hobbyist work or personal projects. In an industry renowned for creativity, why are we stifling it?

"Sometimes you have to be okay with killing your ideas" We asked Matt Yang of Dead Possum Games about the best piece of advice he's had in his career in gamedev.
The folks over at Convergence interviewed us about our new game, Petunia's Purgatory! (apologies for all the random hand movements I have a problem) #indiegame #gamedev
One of these idle games is not like the others... Matt Yang from Dead Possum Games breaks down what sets Petunia's Purgatory apart from the rest! 🧙

Devs are terrified to post their games because someone will show up and go "looks like a shit game." Years of work killed in 4 words. But you know what helps me? The thing my 4yo son always says when he's upset: ok, I don't care. #indiegame #indiedev #roguelike #indiegames #rpg #dungeoncrawler
He's only gone and written 2,500 more words about how game devs feel about generative AI. Latest piece quotes around two dozen different people with an indie background. When asked how they feel about gen AI, not one, but two devs responded, "Fuck that shit." www.gamesradar.com/games/it-cre...
"It creates lesser games": Indie game studios are supposed to love generative AI, so why do the 25 devs I spoke to avoid it?
"So it may be slightly faster, and a lot worse, but it's also more expensive? Neat"

I spent the last few months talking to over 30 game developers about generative AI. It began as a sort of interview survey but became a pretty comprehensive collection of arguments against the technology altogether. www.gamesradar.com/games/why-so...
Also, if the Bernie Sanders of the world really wanted to sell UHC to the political center, one thing they should talk up is the degree that it would supercharge small businesses and startups. UHC would free up SO much talent currently afraid to take a major risk.
Lemme help you: no. You made a machine that's entire purpose is to *seem* as convincingly human as possible and then you're shocked when it seems human? These people have bought into their own con.
Could AI be conscious?

It's not enough to be against AI, you need to be pro art. You need to be a champion of the art you love, you need to share that passion and joy, and do what you can to support the artists who make it, because it's not enough to hate AI, to hate what it's doing to art and media; you gotta love.
The most forgotten demographic: men who own $50k trucks and eat sandwiches at diners in the suburbs/exurbs that we've been interviewing about politics for more than a decade
I'm going to become the Joker
"executives with no understanding of the industry" seems to be an endemic problem across industries: higher education, medicine, you name it, a bunch of suits with MBAs and unearned arrogance are destroying everything around us, and for some reason, we're supposed to accept that they know best
TV writers were right in 2023 and are being proven more right every day — there was a stable television model that made everyone lots of money and put out good shows. Then execs with no understanding of the industry confused the production model and the distribution model, and they blew it all up.
video games are software but video game development is not software development
the idea that games are the result of a single person's ironclad vision rather than a thousand little decisions and compromises and individual people's ideas all coming together in complicated ways
game devs: what are the myths that a lot of players of games think are true about making games that are completely untrue? If you could snap your fingers and they suddenly all knew the truth about it what would it be?
At this point, why does MS even want to make games anymore? They would obviously prefer to do anything else.
microsoft's plan, Lay Off Everybody Who Makes Games & Then Find 1 Billion People Per Day To Play The Games They Aren't Making... it's bold. i will give them that
There's a part in the book "Careless People" where the author beats Zuck at Settlers of Catan, and he is absolutely wrecked by it. Someone pulls her aside to explain everyone else has been letting him win for years. I think about this a lot re: why tech bros think everyone will love AI chatbots.
People who spiral out overusing LLM chatbots are really just experiencing the kind of brain-damaging stream of unconditional validation that’s always been the norm for the hyper-wealthy, which explains a lot.
