I think on the whole it’s totally fine in principle to urge people to be cautious in how they talk about AIPAC et al but some people really do need to get it thru to themselves that it is actually exceptional for one organization to spend >30M on a single primary like it’s nothing.
Hmmm, an interesting argument, but I prefer to re-interpret every election as validating my prior beliefs about electability! 🙃
Deva Woodly@devawo.bsky.social · 8h agoI’m telling you this as a political scientist. The person who is electable is the one who is elected. This can and does change over time. Any and all speculation about “electability” is either puffery or anxiety and is often both.

This is exactly right. This fact is the core of the 'Iranian overplay / mutual ruin' scenario: Iran can't actually do a lot of damage to the USA, but it can burn the GCC. So the scenario the matters is Trump decides 'not our bacon in the fire' and lets the region burn instead of taking the L.

Remarkable the degree to which the IRGC is just not going to let Trump walk away with anything he can call a win. I scoffed a little bit when some security experts said that basically 'humiliation of enemies' was an Iranian regime pattern in terms of aims, but that doesn't seem far off.

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

I didn't get vaccinated out of obedience, but after decades of studying the immune system and evaluating all evidence. Calling that "lack of critical thinking" is not an argument. It's ideology masked as pretend intellect.
I'd say Napoleon but he's only considered a villain because of successful British propaganda.

A lot of people are determined to read Zionism as something innate to Judaism going back to the ancient world, as opposed to a modern nationalism that emerged out of the same conditions that produced other 19th century nationalisms. Unfortunately, both some Zionists and some anti-Zionists do this.

In 4th grade my class debated Puerto Rican statehood and the pro side was "my cousin is Puerto Rican" and the anti side was "How would you even arrange 51 stars on the flag" and I want to stress that this is the level at which the American public as a whole generally engages with issues.

I cannot emphasize enough times to enough people that Zohran Mamdani was asked approximately 106,437,592,841 times in 2025 if he thought Israel has "the right to exist", to which he replied "yes, with equal rights for all" and all 106,437,592,841 times the people who asked took that as a "no".

Makes you wonder what the question actually means!
