Call it anecdotal, but my Canadian friends who are cancelling their US travel are not doing it because of tariff worries at all; they’re doing it because the US government is currently actively threatening Canada’s sovereignty and economy and they’re all justifiably furious

Oh The Urbanity!@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social · 2y ago

This is exactly why Canadians are fed up with US media. A segment on Canadians cancelling Vermont vacations. Mentions tariffs but not (1) who started the trade war or (2) that the US is constantly threatening to ANNEX our country! This isn’t MAGA. It’s not FOX. It’s a random NBC affiliate.

Psychological safety is NOT about lack of disagreement. Psychological safety REQUIRES: * disagreement and debate * setting standards for behavior and performance, and enforcing them * telling people things they don't want to hear * courage, from the bottom up * humility, from the top down

Controversial take: teams that never argue are often the most dysfunctional ones. Here's why your team should be fighting more. terriblesoftware.org/2025/03/12/w...

Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House. We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication. They own what happens next.

Remember: Wealth can’t be separated from power. Power begets wealth and wealth begets power. We're seeing in real time how the extreme concentration of wealth is distorting our politics, rigging our markets, and granting unprecedented power to a handful of billionaires.

Think about how no one under 30 knows what pensions are, it's a totally alien concept. The GOP goal is to make all government services as alien and unfamiliar. Imagine in a decade, trying to explain to a 20 year old what social security, libraries, grad school, the EPA, OSHA, mass vaccination, ADA,

“I was one of the critics that sat on the side and made the decision there was only two genders, so I got an education that was unbelievable. And I don't know just exactly how to say this but my perspective for people have changed [...] I’d like to apologize" good things still happen sometimes 🥲

This elderly man showed up to support an anti-trans bill in my home state and then, because he had to wait hours to testify, he was stuck listening to queer folks rally against it By the time it was his turn to speak, he'd changed his mind Never doubt that speaking out can change hearts and minds

“I was proud to vote recently for the House budget resolution, which provides the framework—" Rep. Edwards told the town hall in Asheville, North Carolina before cutting himself off as boos washed over him, while other attendees raised their hands to give him a thumbs-down. More:

The fight going on in the Democratic Party right now is not between hard left, left and moderate. It’s between those who want to fight and those who want to cave. And Team Fight stretches across all ideological aspects of the Party. Misread this at your own peril.

It feels like the argument inside of the Democratic establishment is heating up. I hope that's a good thing. I hope there's a faction that understands the fight in front of them and wants to be more proactive. And I hope they're winning against Schumer's milquetoast business as usual.

Extraordinary moment — Nancy Pelosi issues a statement calling on Democratic senators to reject the House funding bill, i.e. to defy Chuck Schumer. "Democratic senators should listen to the women," she says, referring to Murray/DeLauro who want a 1-month stopgap bill instead.

hey friends. there’s a whole lot going on, but I am still on the job hunt and watching savings vanish monthly any leads welcome, especially if you or your company are hiring devops/SRE and support related roles travel is not really safe for me now VT and/or remote, relocation negotiable

fen@crayzeigh.com · 2y ago

Hi, hello, it's me I got laid off in November and a gig at all would be great If you know me, it's probably because I've been doing DevRel for 7+yr, but it isn't really safe anymore. So SRE/Ops roles, but if it can also help me move my loves someplace safe i'm pretty flexible, tbh

The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents 800,000+ federal and D.C. workers (i.e. people directly impacted by a government shutdown), is urging senators to vote no on the House GOP's CR. In other words, AFGE is saying a government shutdown is less bad than this GOP bill.

American exceptionalism is why many Americans genuinely don't understand why Canadians wouldn't want to join the US because they don't understand that people in other countries see the US for what it is- without freedom colored glasses (formerly known as rose colored glasses but sold in the USA).

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social · 2y ago

I’m convinced American exceptionalism is a big part of what made us vulnerable to Trump. We’re so used to thinking of ourselves as the Special Freedom Country that a lot of people find it inconceivable we could rapidly collapse into shabby despotism even as they watch it happen.

I read this book called “Let Them”. It’s super popular a en has sold lots of copies. The problem is that it is full of feel good mono with no substance. When you “let them”, you get the situation the United States is currently facing.

/4 Yglesias’ view is that slogans like “states’ rights” and “welfare queens” and “anchor babies” are all just preexisting sincere concerns of the American electorate that emerged unprompted from the people. That’s deeply credulous.

/3 The idea that the American people were a simmering cauldron of anxiety about trans issues and the GOP just finally acknowledged it is ridiculous. The trans panic is as cynical, bad-faith, and artificial as the “people eating dogs” panic. “Moderating” to their framing is capitulation to evil.

/2 Today the demand for “moderation” calls on people to accept the Right’s hysterical bad faith framing of trans issues in a way that demeans humans and reduces liberty. If you do that their next demand will be that you abandon some other group or value.

Put another way: I’ve never had the sense that Yglesias has any actual values, just strategies. “Moderating” is a questionable strategy when you have no control over what “moderate” means and you’re just reacting to bad-faith fascists who will demand that you abandon value after value.

Popehat@kenwhite.bsky.social · 2y ago

Yglesias looks at Columbia and says “well appeasement clearly works.” Yglesias also utterly lacks the insight to understand that the Right currently defines what “moderate stances” means and is dragging it inexorably into fascism with his assistance.

White people jokingly calling Vance and other white dudes “DEI hires” annoys me. It concedes the framing that DEI is bad and results in undeserving people getting jobs they wouldn’t have otherwise
