It's Briar! Hi! I'm an American werewolf and writer living in London. Website: briarripleypage.xyz Self-pubbed stuff on flameswallower.itch.io
We all have moments where the right opportunity at the right time would cause us to make a poor choice. So when you're designing a system, part of your job is building it to ensure those opportunities are rare, and known, and watched for. Don't rely on people to be perfect in the moment.
My only regret in editing Under a Malevolent Eye is that it doesn't feature a pervert glasses story. Other than that, it's a perfect surveillance horror anthology. The book comes out next Tuesday, so if you order it from our store now, I'll ship it today: www.cursedmorselspress.com/product/unde...

you're a bully with a sad backstory but you're still bullying
the dad of one of my high school friends was a geophysicist & one of the last stubborn holdouts against plate tectonics. I forget exactly what his whole deal was, but yeah. it was *that* new
It's funny to me how now everyone knows how very old the Appalachians are, but this fact permeating into broader society is extremely recent. Plate tectonics itself only became the accepted theory in *1965* Your parents didn't know that the Appalachians include the Scottish Highlands.
great write up, feels very fair, makes both books sound interesting
out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
Finally, some "I'd have two nickels"-type details--for instance, we did not expect to encounter TWO erotic corn-on-the-cob eating scenes, in TROLL 2 and FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!
wild fact about the egtved girl is that portions of her brain remain preserved. that's the person! the actual thoughts of a bronze age girl were housed in there!
i love bog bodies! one of those subjects i just return to to think about every so often. however these are not bog items, these belong to the egtved girl, who was buried in a sealed oak coffin en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egtved_...

Bog bodies are also our best source for perishable material culture in the distant past. These clothes belonged to a girl who died in Denmark around 1370 BC!
A pleasantly creepy story about grief and a possible werewolf - The Not-Dog-Thing by @coreyfarrenkopf.bsky.social www.bourbonpenn.com/issue/39/the...
Corey Farrenkopf > The Not-Dog-Thing > Bourbon Penn
After Mom died, Dad started making plant identification TikToks. Of course I gave him a follow. It was my idea after all. He was so depressed. So glum. Everyone needs an outlet for their grief.

The Appalachians are a billion years, two supercontinents, and 4 orogenic periods old. They’ve been eroding since 200 million years before the Rockies formed. They are the same range as the Scottish highlands, Scandinavian Mountains, and Atlas Mountains. The caves predate bones.
It's so cute when people on the east coast talk about mountains
hi. i'm emily ghost. and i'm here to teach you how to have safe sex with spectral entities. don't. no sex is ever safe. you might think oh, ghosts aren't corporeal entities, they're not filled with gross liquids and vile humors. wrong. there are over 9000 types of ectoplasm. and they're all wet.
sometimes it is like people heard the tale of the scorpion and the frog and the lesson they derived is not "it was in the scorpion's nature to sting and one should live in accordance with that knowledge" but "we need to yell at scorpions every time they sting something so they'll stop doing it"
i'm starting to think the new york times might be hostile to our political project. but we better keep pointing out to each other that its headlines are rhetorical devices for a few more years, just in case
trans person who only interacts with other groups of trans people in the context of adversarial online discourse: holy shit why does every [trans person in other demographic] hate [trans people in my demographic] so much
I guess this isn't "years ago" so much as "recurring" but every time there's a solar or lunar eclipse the People Who Are Not Sure What The Moon Is Or Does come out and spread their bizarre theories and I think that's beautiful
What's the bizarre take by some internet rando that you saw years ago but still think about regularly because it was just so unhinged? Mine is the Redditor who said that all cats hate to be touched by humans and what we interpret as affection and pleasure is actually an expression of their trauma.
I've talked about the Sameer Project before—an excellent life-saving on-the-ground initiative in Gaza. Since April 2024, they've distributed nearly a quarter of a million meals alone (plus water, medical care, and shelter). But funding has dropped so much that they'll have to shut down without help.
Food & Water x The Sameer Project
Translating Falasteen (Palestine), in collaboration with The Sameer Project, launched a fundraising campaign to support families in Gaza facing severe hardships. Our mission is to provide food & water...

It doesn’t seem to me that it’s like drugs or alcohol, but it DOES seem to me like a combination of gambling addiction and being in a very toxic/manipulative/controlling “friendship” with a swindler. I think there needs to be social judgment, but also compassion.
We're laughing at this guy for saying something dumb while in the throes of AI addiction, but now I'm wondering if we shouldn't treat it like a drug or alcohol problem. These people need help.
how did i sleep on secretary (2002)? this is charming!
