Nice AI-image-generating tool, but it will never be as great an artist as Onfim, a child who lived in the Novgorod Republic in the mid-1200s and who scribbled these drawings and schoolwork writings on birch bark at the age of 6 or 7.

I'll tell you something else deeply meaningful to me today: @archipelagobooks.bsky.social is publishing Sevgi Soysal's "Walking." It's the first translation I've sponsored, something I've wanted to do for a long time. When I read Soysal's "Dawn," I knew I wanted to see her other work in print.

What helps me contextualize so much of the weirdness of people's reactions during and since Covid is how we reacted to the last one. The flu pandemic of 1918-19 killed more people than World War I in half the time. And it barely appears in popular media EVER, ANYWHERE.

Currently losing my mind bc I dont know how to deal with my aging parents bc we live in the global south. We dont have any facilities that is comparable even 20% of what americans are used to. But if i dont step up theyll die, and i dont want that. Idk I just feel so alone and helpless

I am going through Bram Stoker’s earliest notes on DRACULA today - they include a list of the powers and features of the Count (then named “Wampyr” before Stoker stumbled on “Dracula”), many of which are never elucidated in the book…

Changes to base of skull and an abnormality of her cervical vertebrae shows she experienced significant effects in her life. At the least, she could have expected to have the sensation of insects crawling across her body, as nerves were compressed. She may have also auditory/visual hallucinations.
