The hot sunny weather brought a bumper year for grapes this year. Teaming up as usual with a friend who has an allotment in Southampton we have 20L of red and 22L of white now fermenting - a record, and we only had to add half the amount of sugar we normally do.

Thank you @gilltav.bsky.social for reminding us all of the Police response in 2021 👇 when some 40 environmental activists of Insulate Britain blocked the Port of Dover: 39 arrests. Compare that to yesterday when 200-400 fascist paramilitaries intimidated Dover town and blocked the Port: 0 arrests.

New lab paper, led by @ellliieee.bsky.social with assist from @wickellomics.bsky.social, other lab members, and folks at @li-corenv.bsky.social - how do we study photosynthesis in aquatic plants? Turns out it's pretty hard! Part review, part methods paper. Check it out! doi.org/10.1002/aps3...

While both nori & wakame are edible seaweed, they are separated by >1 billion (!) years of evolution. Nori is red algae, which acquired its chloroplasts via primary endosymbiosis; wakame is brown algae, which acquired its chloroplasts from another algae. They are about divergent as human vs yeast.

Let's talk about AOC as a young scientist & her award winning research on antioxidants & C. elegans, a standard roundworm model. She grew up in the Bronx. Ethnically Puerto Rican, her dad Sergio, an architect, died when she was 19. Her mother cleaned houses, drove a school bus. Working class.

People just don't realize how smart AOC is. She came in second at the national Intel Science and Engineering Fair. An *incredibly* competitive field. That's roughly equivalent to being the second best forward in high school basketball in the United States.

We're hiring 🔬🌱🦠 We're looking for someone with confocal microscopy expertise to join our work on plant–microbe interactions @thesainsburylab.bsky.social . A whole new suite of genetically encoded reporters + 3D spatial gene expression tools like PHYTOMap and more. Please share!
