"is a hopeful crime novel still noir" is easily answered here by the fact that A Violent Masterpiece isn't pure noir, it's also partly/covertly hardboiled, with fallen characters playing detective in LA's wilderness. doesn't matter how dark a hardboiled story gets, it almost always allows for hope.
