a place to fuck each other is a game you can read for free on @lackingceremony.bsky.social's website. it has a rule that changed the way i think about games and i have not been able to stop thinking about since i read it seven years ago and literally no one i've ever spoken to has heard of it

Header: should and shouldn’t
Scenes end when a Lover acknowledges to herself that “I shouldn’t be here.” This is the phrase, a sort of ritual phrase, that ends the scene and puts its hopeful beginnings in relief. We don’t get to see what she does with that knowledge, or how she might extricate herself from the situation: there is the realisation that “I shouldn’t be here” and that’s that. Play just enough to establish why and how she came to that realization, maybe catching her next expression or gesture, and then end the scene.

You can end the scene on that phrase, or on any variation of it. We shouldn’t be here. She shouldn’t be here. I don’t know why I’m here. I’ve been here before. You get to choose where the emphasis lies—on the I, on the here.

This might seem like a strange thing—to cut from scenes right when a conflict has been identified. Trust that it will be rewarding to do so. Trust that it will be more interesting to immediately skip ahead, to learn about the ways that these characters reinvent themselves and reimagine their needs from scene to scene.

You are three people in an apartment during "movie night." The vibes are TERRIBLE.

To play this game, you will need: a six-sided die (d6), something to write with, and this document

PRE-SHOW:

Read the following paragraphs to build out your roommates. Whenever you read something in (parenthesis), select one of the options inside.

"Movie night" was (not your idea / a stupid idea / a way to get into your roommates pants) that has since become a weekly, (mandatory) chore.

Every week, you get on your (futon / couch / separate chairs) and find something to watch from (your streaming service / the video store / a USB from your brother Mike).

There is a (tension) in the room, as each roommate takes turns nervously selecting a movie ever week. Today, the movie was chosen by (name the first roommate and their prefered genre / name the second roommate and something that frightens them / name the third roommate and how their mom died).

The movie is called (Bulldozer Revolution / Grimsby Goose / The Body Farm). Upon hearing the name, (name the first roommate and why they winced / name the second roommate and why they laughed / name the third roommate and why they popped an edible).

Your TV set-up is (state of the art and janky / old but reliable / a projector and a laptop that *will* display full text message notifications). As the film begins, everyone gets as comfortable as they can... which is impossible, because (name the first roommate and which roommate they are obssessed with / name the second roommate and which roommate they *just* had sex with / name the third roommate and which roommate they broke up with last month).

INTERLUDES:

A game of AM4EVER consists of three rounds, encompassing the beginning, middle, and end of the movie.

To begin a round of AM4EVER, roll 3d6 and write down all numbers rolled. Then, consult the list below:
- On a 1 or 2, the first roommate is triggered by something – what happens to set them on edge?
- On a 3 or 4, the second roommate notices something odd in the movie – what strange pattern keeps occuring?
- On a 5 or 6, the third roommate is distracted by something in the apartment – what weird sensation keeps coming over them?

As the third and final round concludes, determine which numbers were rolled the most. Then, consult the list below:
- 1 or 2: The first roommate has a REALLY bad panic attack, traumatizing everyone involved
- 3 or 4: The second roommate looks up the revolting production history of the movie, telling everyone and ruining movie night
- 5 or 6: The third roommate accidentally left the oven on, causing a small fire that forces the entire building to evacuate
