sentient curio cabinet. writes fantastika, spouts dog nonsense. slush reader for giganotosaurus and small wonders. the bird's name is rambo. hwa, codexian, ey/em https://maldamarlys.com/ https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/aardwyrm

my current book has great potential but is terribly under-edited. first draft stuff, sentences that contradict the one before, as you know bob dialogue, internal inconsistencies in time and setting. and 2 editors are thanked in the acknowledgements. is everyone just too overwhelmed to work or what

beauty and the beast. i have one of those early dads. he opened the door while the last showing was still on. so there's this murky, moody castle nightscape and some inscrutable being just floating while beams of light shoot out, and the whole movie for tiny me is just building to whatever THAT was

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

found a circa 2004 stitch n' bitch book while looking for something entirely else and while the patterns are fine (and I may in fact make a few, it's that time again and no worries about AI crap) I cannot imagine a more specific artifact of a more exact moment

An early-oughts-alt girl in a knitted halter top called "the sexie" Inspired by Suzy izzardA chapter headed "babies, dogs, and cats" and a perfectly nice looking toddler wearing lil devil pants, which are baby pants with a tailA pouty, heavy browed skater type with very slightly long hair in a sweater with cartoon flame sleevesA pattern entitled "butterflies are free" with a model channeling the most manic pixie dream girl energy imaginable as she poses with clumsily knitted butterflies just kinda stitched onto other knitted objects

my first 5 ttrpgs 1. middle school friend's dad's AD&D 2. a short-lived licensed d20 game of thrones thing from before it was a show 3. (new) world of darkness (just rolling them all into one) 4. semi-official playtest of a LARP version of savage worlds-inflected deadlands 5. shadowrun i think?

My first 5 TTRPGs (Best friend was a Palladium kid) 1. TMNT and other strangeness 2. After the Bomb 3. Palladium fantasy 4. RIFTS 5. Beyond the Supernatural

1. can i write a 3-5 page synthesis paper in a day 2. can i write a paper that is only 3-5 pages at all 3. how bad was my headache last weekend that i decided this was the move 4. oh yeah can i also finish revising a novella before friday 5. i make great choices guys

ranks near the bottom on the infinite list of problems but i do occasionally wanna use the word "grok" in its original sense (of being a pedantic nerd who's also kinda crunchy) and my fingers always freeze on the keyboard followed by a whole-body shudder

among many reasons to dip onto The Classics is the vast, friendly history. how many multitudes have curled up on a cool autumn night rich in cricket songs with the weird tales of Pu Songling and a cup of tea? but only in recent decades have there been like 12 kinds of sleepytime alone

The sleepytime lavender celestial seasonings box. The iconic sleepy bear dozes in a boat on a lake with an owl, and also the boat is full of lavender

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

aw, it's gorgeous george! has a much more accurate mount these days (and, as the specimen is now identified as daspletosaurus, the name is not so apt as it was for a purported gorgosaurus) but i'm juuuust old enough to remember this guy greeting you as you came in

Before SUE the T. rex, there was ‘Gorgeous George' - Field Museum

Awesome shot of the Great Hall of the Field Museum in 1978

The Great Hall of the Field Museum. A massive multi-level classical Greek revival style space with arches and colonnades. Displaying the huge taxidermy of two fighting African elephants that is still there to this day. As well as some kind of theropod dinosaur (T. rex?) skeleton in an upright posture that anyone who has seen Jurassic Park knows is wrong as heck. Thing looks crazy.

I ran a large RPG club at a girls middle school for many years and do have thoughts and advice that I've updated. I’ll thread but also post here: gist.github.com/altercation/... Spoiler: A lot of my advice is not specific to RPGs! cc @montecookgames.com @jonesm80.bsky.social @aardwyrm.bsky.social

Calling all nerds! Has anyone successfully run an after-school TTRPG club? Do we have any advice for improving player retention?

we get proper fog around here so rarely. so exciting to be living in the cover of a novel where the ghost of your missing sister leads you ever closer to the dark secret rotting the roots of your family tree.

A photo of a streetlight in the fog, silhouettes of trees and someone's decorative lamppost stark against the haze

my mother has been convinced i am secretly starving and dying since i went vegetarian. just as i thought i'd trained her out of offering to make something for me to come down and have every time she cooks, she caught me with a microwave thingy on a night i have a headache and i gotta start all over

who has not forgotten the occasional cup of tea but i seem to have brewed a pot and had it vanish entire from my mind. i take this as exoneration for that nap i took way too late in the day. clearly necessary

so my school district has decided they have a dungeons and dragons club and are willing to put me in charge of it. i have a long list of stuff to do, but the biggest problem, i know from 3 years attempting to run chess club, is getting them to show up. ideas so far:

fighting 4 snow maidens, 4 wights, 2 vrocks, a witch, and 3 or more vampires in d&d tonight, and also with our party of 6 we have 2 helper npcs, the fallen paladin's undead steed, the artificer's robot, 55 burgers, 55 fries, 55 tacos, 55 pies... i will be taking about one turn per hour, ama i guess
