Overriding local decisions that allow for more housing supply makes zero sense. Watching a conservative government add heavy regulation to free-market housing supply is simply mind-boggling.

Here’s a gift link to the Globe and Mail investigation about American interference in the Alberta referendum, and the separatist operatives (one of whom is a UCP President) who went to the United States to offer them our water and oil. www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/64d9ad7...

The elephant in the room

Alberta separatists have gone to D.C. offering fresh water and oil in exchange for American support – and Republican operatives have provided tactical assistance inside the province

The time change option chosen unilaterally by Danielle Smith, in the face of overwhelming evidence supporting Standard Time, will cause health harms for those in northern AB, specifically. Imagine being a parent in Peace River with a sunrise closer to 10am. Mental/physical health harms, etc.

Just looking up sunrise times for the next few months as one does, and I'm realizing that sunrise in Calgary under the new time zone rules will be after 9AM between November 20 and February 9. Sigh.

New ads just dropped - There’s a poll out tomorrow via CBC that apparently shows the UCP down. That’s because Danielle Smith’s catering to separatists is unpopular, and the closer we get to Oct 19, the more people are (rightfully) blaming her for this debacle. No to the Nine.

On October 19th, send Danielle Smith a message. Vote NO to her nine costly questions nobody asked for. No to Danielle Smith. No to the Nine. #ableg #abpoli #alberta #abreferendum

a lot of people want to believe that right-wing beliefs are rooted in some legitimate material grievance. that makes it easier to imagine that if we simply solved the material problem, they’d deradicalize. but they won’t, because they aren’t disillusioned, they’re just morons.

I know this is a common belief, but it’s not true. If people went anti-vaxx/MAHA because they were excluded from the medical establishment, we would see sky-high rates among poor people, minorities and the uninsured. We don’t.

It is objectively bananas that we as citizens have to consult a power markets expert for what we should do with our bills (fixed? Floating?) And I’m pretty sure most people aren’t like me, and know to go find @blakeshaffer.bsky.social’s advice whenever I wonder what I should do. Anyway, advice 👇

Alberta power prices are back in the news. Time for some retail charts. 🧵

I look forward to October 20, when the Government of Canada is past the separatist referendum and discovers two things: 1. the “rule of law” means upholding and enforcing the Canada Health Act, and 2. Canadians support Medicare as part of our national identity.

New poll: 53% of Canadians oppose Alberta’s Bill 11 after learning what it would do, compared with 33% who support it. Concerns focus on higher costs, unequal access and pressure on the public system. abacusdata.ca/canadians-w...
