I feel like in literally any other context, if you gave 6 figures to a teenager with no assets, income, credit, or work history, when said teenager struggled to pay back those 6 figures, you'd be told "you made a shitty deal, eat the loss, sucks to suck" but school is the exception for some reason

It’s really fucked up we told generations of kids they had to take out personal loans in order to improve their lives as we cut funding to schools and when that turned out to be bullshit the general consensus has been “fuck those kids”

We were treated as stateless before we came to the US and the US was the first place to give us a state. We were Americans first and no amount of Christians giftwrapping a piece of land that was promised to the Palestinians is going to make that land have anything to do with our nationality.

Israel is not our “mother country” is the thing. Our families were in the US before the Israeli state existed and even among those who came later, we came from Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Iran, Uzbekistan, and more. We have absolutely no cultural ties to Israel.

i was talking about this the other night. a lot of american jews aren’t used to being blamed for the actions of the “mother country” and struggle to accept or realize that being blamed for the actions of the country associated with your ethnic bloc is a normal (nasty) part of the american experience

everyone is being shy, so I'm going to add a few to get us rolling that I know get banned, and I don't see on lists often enough: DAMSEL by @elanakarnold.bsky.social is banned from every public school in Utah and is also a masterpiece in feminist YA fiction: bookshop.org/p/books/dams...

Here's the thing: most books that are banned don't make the lists that get circulated each #BannedBooksWeek. If you're a book creator and your book gets banned, please respond to this post with your book and its buy link on bookshop.org. That way we can support indies and banned books 💛

1,200 sexual assault cases were filed at Cornell from 2018 to 2024. Most of those found responsible received minor sanctions that allowed them to remain on campus, such as probation or training. Only 7 ended in expulsion or dismissal. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

A third of undergraduate women say they've been sexually assaulted. But on average, Cornell reported expelling just one attacker per year.

THE POISON PALACE: unfolds the era of Alexander the Great's conquering rampage across Eurasia with a graceful, fiery verisimilitude both intimate & mythic...from the Indian subcontinent & stretching all the way to ancient Babylon--it resounds in time, & sings to the present with a singular voice.

Shreya Ila Anasuya - THE POISON PALACE@thresholdrose.bsky.social · last mo.

In the Secretum Secretorum, Alexander is said to have been targeted by vishkanyas, or mythical Indian poison maidens. THE POISON PALACE, my debut novel, takes that proposition seriously. To celebrate the arrival of both galleys, please give me a page number and I'll give you a quote.

A book cover with a green background (and against a yellow background) and the image of a femme person with her back to the viewer. She is wearing a red upper garment and gold tone jewellery in her hair, ears, neck, and arms, and a five-headed snake is wrapped around her neck. On both sides of her are two crumbling ornate pillars, wrapped all over with oleander and datura flowers. The text says THE POISON PALACE: A NOVEL by Shreya Ila Anasuya

I find the "if you don't use AI then you don't understand what it's doing" to be goofily anti-intellectual. I can understand what something is doing by reading about it. Also, these folks never seem to pick up on their own anthropomorphizing. "Self reflect/self correct". No, there's no self.

This is a better epilogue to my January story about the private equity firm profiting off of ICE's cruelest flights than I could have ever possibly hoped for. CHICAGO: You went to the mat and protected (at a minimum!) thousands of immigrants from torture. Take a bow. prospect.org/2026/10/02/i...

The City That Brought Down an ICE Airline - The American Prospect

In Chicago, progressive alderpeople held up a contract until a private equity firm was forced to dispatch Omni Air International, protecting thousands of immigrants from deportation.

Lemme just post another stellar quote: "Polarization is the country’s immune response to an unpopular, antidemocratic, and intentionally divisive faction grabbing for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success, reputation, and democratic self-government."

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph

Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

I continue to believe that if people are going to share propaganda images in a spirit of "Can you believe this shit?" the least they could do is draw a big red X through them so that is the first thing the viewer sees.

Makary and all of his fringe allies who willingly and excitedly went to work for an anti-vax conspiracy theorist while he dismantled America’s public health ought to be drummed out of academia and professional life forever. You should not get to come back from that.

Until the medical and public health establishment comes to grips with the fact that the political right wants to destroy and discredit everything they stand for, we’ll never have accountability. Makary was pushing COVID bullshit for years before literally, happily going to work for RFK Jr.

Makary used his position atop FDA to stack the agency with cranks and spearheaded a misinformation-fueled campaign against mRNA vaccines. But he’s apparently been welcomed back into academia and professional life. Vinay Prasad too is back at his academic institution. And I know tenure. But still.
