“Survey after survey has shown that business owners overestimate how many customers drive to their stores vs walking or biking. In a 2012 Los Angeles study, more than half of the store owners on the bike-laned part of the boulevard thought most of their customers drove. The actual number was 15%.”

I read all the studies on the economic impact of bike lanes. Here's what I learned.

Research proves that bike lanes are good for business. So why do so many stores and restaurants still oppose them?

Pedestrianizing a main street spine in central Reykjavík was controversial with businesses when it was first done, so they made it a summer pilot. They kept it that way, a pilot, for over a decade, and then went ahead and made it year-round and permanent. No big deal. No controversy. People like it.

Sign in Icelandic saying “Hi! this is a pedestrian zone.” Notice it didn’t say “road closed” like we do in North America? Because it’s not closed. It’s open.People walking along the pedestrian street in central Reykjavik, Iceland.More people walking on the transformed pedestrian street Pedestrian street with rainbow paint on the street, and the iconic church terminating the street view.

Could you do something about the long delays at crossings faced by people walking along the Home St / Tollcross / Earl Grey St / Lothian Rd corridor? Waiting at the King’ theatre junction on Sunday evening for minutes, along with ~40 others, many gave up & crossed on the red man. Only 3 or 4 cars

Just been for a walk to the shops with my husband. This is the commentary from him: - wow, the car fumes are so bad? - why isn't there a crossing here? - why do the lights take so long to change? - why is this pavement blocked? etc, etc Welcome to pedestrian life dear husband 😉

The Welsh 20mph default is arguably the most successful road safety initiative this century. Winning international road safety awards, reducing casualties by 26% and insurance premiums. Yes, more should have been spent on engagement, but its a winning policy. www.20splenty.org/wales-pma-20mph

People: it's outrageous that my local council can't fix all the potholes. Also people: I'm driving around in a very heavy SUV, parking on pavements and I want to pay less tax, not more.

LSEG believe W Hotel is breaching promises to restrict vehicle access to St James Square, Edinburgh. Councillors agreed in January to permit a maximum of 2 private hires or taxis into the Square at any one time: but multiple vehicles are now routinely being permitted to access it (photo from 29/4)

Like Broomhouse residents, Living Streets Edinburgh Group also urges Edinburgh Council to improve pavements! We're calling for an immediate £500k uplift in the footway maintenance budget - which has been frozen since 2023 tinyurl.com/stvpavements

'Forced onto the road': Residents plead for repairs to unsafe pavements

Sloped surfaces, uneven patchwork repairs and missing dropped kerbs are leaving routes unsafe for vulnerable locals, campaigners warn
