Interestingly the legislation states that warning signage is not required for 20mph streets www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1994/24... I'm not sure that addresses the risks to more vulnerable road users, who would still suffer significant injuries from colliding with kerbs/pillars at 20mph.

Hi all, thanks for flagging this up. I went at the weekend to have a look and agree it's not good at the moment. I've emailed transport officers to ask that the cycle lane is instated and to add lane defenders. I'll let you know when I hear back. @edi.bike @spokes.org.uk

After lengthy repair, the 172m Porto’s Dom Luís I Bridge reopened to public transport, taxis, cyclists & pedestrians only. After lengthy repair, #Edinburgh’s 160m North Bridge reopened with a lane of hatching, no cycling provisions, without widening busy pavements and no traffic reduction measures.

Dom Luís I Bridge is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the river Douro between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. On 27 June 2003, the upper deck was closed to motor traffic in order to adapt the structure for the metro system. The new "D Line" was inaugurated on 18 September 2005, and opened to the metro trams and pedestrian traffic. The lower deck remained open to general traffic until October 2021, when it closed temporarily to all traffic for the start of repairs and renovation work predicted to last about one year. When it reopened, in April 2023, the lower deck was restricted to public transport, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians.Photo shows North Bridge, four lanes for vehicles (x2 bus lanes, x2 vehicle area) and a fifth for hatching - space that could have been used for wider pavements. North Bridge is a bridge in Edinburgh linking the High Street with Princes Street, and the Old Town with the New Town. The current bridge was built between 1894 and 1897.

💦 Didn’t they foresee the splashing risk due to blocking drainage or is the puddle especially for cycles? The exit markings at Candlemaker Row MUST be realigned as the cycle markings lead directly into kerb & visibility for buses etc exiting is blocked 🙄 A primary cycle route downgrade yet again 🙁

The thing that Spokes have picked up on is CEC designating a road part of the primary cycling network doesn’t inherently provide guidance preserving cycle safety for non-active-travel dept works like this buildout, so stuff like this seems systemically enabled

Start of spokes article... Spokes traffic count May 2026: Bikes up everywhere! Our regular May traffic count, at Lothian Road and Forrest Road, found bikes up everywhere: northbound and southbound, morning rush hour and lunchtime. With car numbers fairly static compared to last year, bikes rose to 19.2% of all vehicles in the morning and 12.3% at lunchtime, our highest post-pandemic figures. At Forrest Road, morning bikes formed 31% of all northbound vehicles, almost one in three. Parallel counts by Spokes Porty members found the highest ever number of bikes during both time periods, whilst analysis of automatic counter data by Edward Tissiman (below) has found substantial 2026 bike use growth on Leith Walk. Interestingly, car single-occupancy in our central area count fell to its lowest ever level, although that was not the case at Portobello.
