It seems quite natural that there could be a feedback effect in presidential approval (having low approval causes approval to go down and vice versa). I have absolutely no idea how to test that empirically

Maybe the single most important topic in Smith's Wealth of Nations is just his account of *what it means for a nation to be wealthy.* The mercantilist idea is a giant pile of gold; Trump's talk of 'saving' billions by not trading is the same. Smith says wealth is having more of the stuff for living

Mercantilism is really intuitively appealing. I think it's genuinely difficult to get people to recognize that a country's wealth just works differently than a person or company. I think this is the fundamental reason that we don't want businesspeople running the country.

It is actually interesting to see a real life early modern Mecantalist monarch, to see someone who actually just sincerely believes that worldview. Bit odd that he graduated from one of the most prestigious business schools in the world tbh.

I'm a (moderately) successful philosopher—I've published work I'm proud of, have won teaching awards, etc. I would have failed out of grad school without my advisor, and it all came down to fit.

What is the IceCube neutrino observatory? Neutrinos are elusive particles that rarely interact, but can create flashes of light when they do. Most neutrino detectors are giant water tanks surrounded by light detectors. IceCube is kilometer-long strings of detectors embedded in the Antarctic ice.

A rare solo #NobelPrize in physics goes to neutrino scientist Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin”. Full coverage here: physicsworld.com/a/francis-ha... 🧪⚛️

“Watson’s 1968 book, amid other slights & sexist language directed at Franklin, implied the flash of insight was his. Popular accounts still routinely suggest Franklin missed the significance of the photo. She never had a chance to challenge Watson’s dismissive narrative; she died of cancer in 1958”

Exclusive: A new analysis refutes James Watson’s claim that he was the first to recognize the significance of the famed photograph 51. https://scim.ag/4rTKck8
