Ok but I don't want scarce community resources like electricity and water to go to data centers. I want them to go to human beings (electricity, water) and pronghorn antelope and purple sage and elk and basin wildrye and even wolves (water). Tech isn't sharing resources, it just takes.

I take exception to the idea that universities were actually doing well in the Before GenAI Times with their haphazard accumulation of teaching “practices.” If anything, GenAI should prompt a very hard look at the assumptions we make about teaching, assessment, and grading.

Actions that, say, a provost might take in lieu of lamenting a "wicked problem": -advocating for / implementing more equitable courseloads that allow teachers to focus on new teaching challenges -improving professional development resources and opportunities for faculty and staff (with compensation)

Oh, and by supporting residents to do it, especially in neighbourhoods where the obstacles might be greater. Play streets can be a simple, accessible thing, but in some places, for some communities more support is needed. See Playing Out’s toolkit: playingout.net/play-streets...

The thing about writing up a year-long research project is that the act of writing - of making sense of something on the page so that someone else can pick it up and use it - is completely transformational for both your own understanding of it and the quality of analysis.

I want to bring context to this, because a lot of people think this is something the legislature did. This is a citizens' initiative. Washington has a process by which anyone can file an initiative, on anything, and if it meets a threshold requirement for voter signatures, it goes on the ballot.

As you look toward fall class, do two things for space and grace; . First, add two flex days to you syllabus. You can move the into place when you're sick when everyone needs a metal health day, when a concept needs a little more time. it takes pressure off when the unexpected happens (more)

"socially constructed" does not mean there is no basis for a phenomenon in the physical world. it just means how we describe and categorize that thing is not a given and can vary across time and culture. what is life? are viruses alive? how many biological kingdoms? all socially constructed.

YES to solar power, YES to ongoing experimental farm practices in ever-changing climate conditions, YES to finding and celebrating greener, more sustainable ways of approaching life and industry. NO to these improvements positioned as data centers enablers. Something to keep an eye on.

reading the bookforum review of Middlemen and I expect that the scholarly publishing equivalent of the agent is the freelance developmental editor. if conglomeration drove the rise of the agent, austerity drove the rise of the latter—the editor who actually edits, helps w/ the proposal, etc.

I see some people are reading this post as being about Exeter but it’s referring to the University of Hertfordshire. And that’s Owen’s point. Less coverage about the axe falling there but it’s equally sad.

So a whole lot of my talented Humanities colleagues are now unemployed as of today. A lot of understandable concern over Exeter. But for over two decades my Hums colleagues were in the top quartile for their research contribution to society. History top 10. Now gone with only a national whisper.

Lots of places are like this. AirBnB is not the only platform responsible. those of us who travel need to take this seriously. Even though that probably means travelling less and spending more when we do.

www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08... In NSW there’s far more AirBnB’s than there are long term rental listings. The numbers are staggering. And residents are being pushed out for short term profits and those enjoying their holidays with homes to go back to. These are creating #homelessness. #auspol 🤬

Let’s not forget that local authorities in England took parents to court to force them to send their kids to school when parents thought it unsafe. And still actively encourage parents not to keep children home when ill. Their 100% attendance obsession does not suggest an interest in health.

This!! As @plashingvole.bsky.social once put it, England doesn’t have an education system. It has an examinations system. And the government is in the process of making it even harder to meet children’s needs within that system

Anyway, your problem isn‘t finding the time to take notes. The problem is that taking notes is thinking and thinking has to be done by someone. women have been doing a lot of metacognition that looks like a task when it’s really thinking.

Anyway back to my ongoing theory that women use AI to get more done and men use AI to get out of doing more.

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

Notetaking in meetings is tiny case in point - used to be some predictable social assumptions who would do it; now anyone can offer to do ”notetaking” by turning on the AI listener. Further interesting scenario is human recollection / notes (taken by habit by a person) conflict with AI summary

Like, it makes 0 sense that the companies pushing little widgets onto your desktop are doing so in pursuit of "biological and cognitive freedom", but - honestly - these guys have *written it all down and put it on the Internet*. Better evals isn't going to resolve whatever's going on there.
