there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5

Seeing a few people sneer "oh look he's doing charts for dinner" again at this makes me rather angry. Especially if you a) read his very next post and b) see the further points made by @besttrousers.bsky.social just below. But people are just allergic to actually thinking about this for some reason.

The rare bit of good traffic safety news. Backup cameras work, and have meaningfully reduced severe injuries among kids under 5 years old caused by backovers. We can argue that cars are too big in the first place, limiting visibility, but this is good tech.

Does everyone agree that Claude is a Bayesian? In my experience, its first instinct is always: hierarchical Bayesian model with partial pooling. Sometimes it will admit there are simpler options, but only if you push back and request them.
