Oxford University’s plans for new offices and academic space on Little Clarendon Street, demolishing the existing 1970s building, have been narrowly approved by city councillors. Locals had objected to construction traffic and the potential loss of two community venues, Common Ground and the Nest.

Tonight we read the heartrending words of those who lost Israeli loved ones on Oct 7th — and Palestinian loved ones in the three years since. We said kaddish for all of them. We refused to compromise on anyone’s humanity. No amount of shouting stopped us. May their memory be for a blessing.

I am very saddened that Zionism is Racism motion has passed. I was on the list as the next speaker against the motion, but was not called. I wrote two different speeches depending on whether the amendment protecting Jewish members was passed. Here they are below:

If A3 fails:
Joshua Alston, Leeds Green Party, I am a Jewish antizionist.
I joined Jewish Greens in 2018 because of an incident in my local party. Four members of my local party signed a letter accusing me of being a Zionist and a mossad agent because of a position I took in defence of trans rights. It was nothing to do with Israel.
They assumed I was a Zionist because I was a Jew who disagreed with them. I’ve been called a Zionist dozens of time since then.
As an antizionist Jew I have to fight twice as hard, be twice as loud and obnoxious to be persuade people that I am an anti-Zionist and for some people it just isn’t enough.
For non-Jews this isn’t a question that gets asked. If you search Zack Polanski is a Zionist you get loads of hits. No-one says Mothin or Rachel are Zionists.
So I am worried about this motion. I don’t think anti-Zionism is racism. I am an anti-Zionist. But I do think there’s a double standard in society.
Some people say Zionist when they mean Jew.
I know the proposers and trust that they don’t think like this. But most of the rest of the country won’t trust them. They will think awful things of us.
There is another way. We could declare that anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia are racisms. We vote for E03 and focus on the material changes that we need for Palestinian freedom. We can focus on stopping the genocide. We can focus on BDS. We can stand up against the proscription of Palestine action.
The Green Party vision is a world where all are free. This takes us backwards. We should vote it down.
If A3 does pass:
Josh Alston. I’m from Leeds Green Party. I am a Jewish anti-Zionist who has spent most of my adult life talking to the Jewish community about Israel, and helping build coalitions for Palestinian liberation.
In my community 64% of people describe themselves as Zionists, but only 12% are pro-Netanyahu. They have criticisms of Israeli racism, but they still call themselves Zionists.
So what do they think?
They like the idea of a place Jews can go in the event of a genocide in Europe, but don’t like the way Israel treats Palestinians. I see this as an opportunity. We’re a party about organising. We’re a party about convincing people.
So how do we talk people round?
Any organiser knows we start from points of connection and the material conditions in Palestine. We start from disgust at the genocide. We talk about settlements. We talk about BDS. We talk about corruption. We talk about apartheid. We talk about Israel’s connection with the far-right. We talk about impunity. We talk about how we can make Jews safe without an ethnostate.
If we start by calling them racist, we will lose those people and they won’t come back.
There are real stakes here. We’ve seen a genocide live streamed in front of eyes. With this profound evil, if someone thinks that the idea of a Zionism, the idea of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine can be separated from the reality of Israel’s as a state I .think they are wrong. But that’s not the most important question for the Green Party.
The question is ‘what are you going to do to stop the genocide and make Palestine free?’
Let’s organise not exclude and build a coalition for a free Palestine. Thank you.

Reading the news, it would be easy to believe that the Green Party has adopted a policy to expel its Jewish members, prevent them from attending synagogue or at the very least scrutinise their activities outside the party. *None of that has happened* 🧵

The UN Older People’s Day will be celebrated in Oxford on October 7th at the Town Hall, with an event organised by older people for older people, to consult, inform & involve residents of 50 years and over on issues which are relevant and of concern and interest to them.

Promo flyer for UN older people's day. Details as per post.

Having been involved in trying to find a solution to all this, I echo Rosi's thoughts exactly. It was obvious to me months back that this was going to be the result but the party collectively buried its head in the sand. What is leadership for, if not to help navigate situations like this?

Watching the car crash evolving in slow motion has been depressing - and more so because the structures and processes in the party that allowed this to happen were so obviously problematic and open to abuse, yet nobody saw addressing this as a priority until it was already far too late. (2)

To Jewish members of the Green Party: Assurances, from the motion proposers, that they had no intention for Jewish members to feel targeted for their beliefs or associations have been clear. And if anyone else does try to use it in this way, I will be there for you with my solidarity and support.

Statement reads: As Greens, we will always uphold universal human rights.

We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.

We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation.

We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government.

And we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way.

We know there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.

With love and respect to every colleague and fellow member, here is my personal view on motion E02, which Greens are set to debate tomorrow as part of our afternoon plenary.

A historic first: Fatima Zahra Mansouri has become Morocco's 🇲🇦first woman Prime Minister, and only the second woman to lead a government in the Arab world. Every first makes the next one more possible. Congratulations! 👏
