I truly don’t know how we undo the damage the Right has done not just to science institutions but to simply the desire to educate and be educated in this country. Many of our systems of scientific outreach are irreversibly dead and there was little pushback from the public.

Question for writers and editors: I'm copy editing a friend's novel at their request. They want to pay me for the work. What's the going rate? (I'm in the US, they're in Europe.) I'm editing it in Google Docs, in case GDocs page count is a helpful metric.
This is heartbreaking. My favorite field trips when I was in grade school were here. I learned a lot about animals and nature here, subjects that I adore maybe thanks to this place. I got to pet a skunk there too!

It’s pretty wild that every kind-of-hot day 50% of Philly’s public school parents have to figure out some kind of childcare situation because the schools *and their aftercare centers* close because there isn’t air conditioning in half of the buildings.
This is called the salt water fallacy. My tankies think that cos we (mostly) did not colonise over bodies of salt water, we therefore did not colonise and must have become the world's largest country without colonialism.

I am resisting making a really long list of widely adopted technologies of yore that have gone away (shoe store fluoroscopes, anyone?) … … but that doesn’t mean you have to.
@ecutruin.bsky.social · 2d agoChatGPT and Gemini each have over a billion active users. This makes them one of the fasted adopted techs in history. So, no, they aren't going to go away. I'd argue that it's rather important to teach students how to make effective use of the tools that they'll ultimately use.

I know too many people have experienced and survived the attempted genocide of their peoples over the last 40 years, and yet somehow we’ve reached a point where advocacy for genocide and ethnic cleansing is common place and acceptable in mainstream political discourse.
Thuman is right. It is war, and it has been war for a while now... Europe (and the rest of the world) need to understand this quick before it's too late.
