Maybe it makes me a credentialist, but I hate how we constantly elevate guys like Yglesias — who have no relevant education or work experience. In politics, he's never run for office, worked on a campaign or served as an appointee. On policy, he has a BA and has never worked in government.

we are calling things like scanning ai images for extra fingers and only trusting a news website as literacies. they were always practices. the literacy was knowing the key words to unlock the system's assumptions. we can't unlock an ai model's assumptions.
So I am deeply empathetic to the desire to develop a literacy framework for AI Like we did for search. But this is a very different beast in a very different market-state relationship.

DHS is now arguing that we cannot even put the names of ICE officers in our lawsuit against those officers. Their position is that, if a defendant works for DHS, they cannot be named in a lawsuit. Never seen anything like it.
It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.
The techno-dystopia I actually fear is a future where most people think truth is whatever Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok say, and the very small number of people who control those systems use that to manipulate for their own ends, making our current epistemic crisis seem small in comparison.

Since we watched Musk literally push a "protect the Boers" button in real time with Grok, we now know people or companies could theoretically pay their way into putting a thumb on the scale for Grok/Claude/ChatGPT. This is why the AI stans want you to believe it's thinking
