This misunderstands the role of private vs. public R&D. Private R&D is great but is connected to R&D tax exemptions, & often doesn't spill out into the public domain. There's a notion we can ramp federal R&D spending down & be competitive. We can’t & we shouldn’t. www.whitehouse.gov/releases/202...

“Even the Mafia says families are off limits.” Freedom of the Press Foundation’s Seth Stern pulls no punches on reports that Trump DOJ subpoenaed NYT reporters’ relatives.

“Even the Mafia says families are off limits. It’s gross that the administration — in its never-ending effort to harass and intimidate reporters who reveal its incompetence — is going after the communications of journalists’ relatives.

The administration’s own guidelines say pursuing journalists is a last resort. But instead, it’s looking for any excuse to snoop on reporters and their relatives, because this has nothing to do with national security and everything to do with chilling journalism. They’re even seeking records from months before the report they claim they’re investigating. The Times’ reporting actually bolstered national security by ensuring that Trump and those who travel with him, including journalists, aren’t flying on an unsafe plane to serve the president’s personal vanity. Trump’s hangers-on should be sending the Times thank- you cards, not subpoenas.”

I think it is cowardly to not engage with the seriousness of our information problems. There, I said it. It is cowardice to crawl back into explanations like "people are all idiotsssssss if they would just listen to meeeeee and use technology the riiiiiiight way" I have no more patience for it.

did threads on the cynical advertising trend but, this is something different. they're emulating like… eames power of 10-type ads crossed with, like, the BASF-style pro-social type ads from the 90s. this is spin. they're emulating their critics first in order to steal the conversation.

why are all these ai ads so awful, cynical, bitter, demeaning, negative, insulting and injurious to the human spirit? whether made with ai, or made to sell ai. the *text* is bleak. including the ipad crush ad in here what the hell is in the water

I’m saddened to announce the passing of my work colleague, The Zodiac Killer. While we were often on opposing sides of the business, I always enjoyed his silly little scavenger hunts.

This admin does so many evil things every day that Idk if I read about this back when the lawsuit was filed & forgot, or if I missed it until now, but withholding ICAC grants - $ meant for fighting child sexual exploitation - from sanctuary cities is truly depraved. www.kpbs.org/news/educati...

Meta ( and every other company making surveillance glasses) is betting on people’s privacy nihilism and fatigue in the hopes that we view these technologies as inevitable and resistance as futile. Neither thing is true.

This is basically what my talks next week are about. If you don’t treat open networks as a database replication problem (and build accordingly) then you will struggle with scale and correctness You don’t try to replicate with rabbitmq

i do think it's funny that rpc maintainers look at event bus models and think they're unmaintainable slop. when that's exactly what event bus maintainers think about rpc models! (one guess what side i'm on though)
