At this morning's Seattle council budget meeting, Maritza Rivera is complaining that the city's 116-member encampment sweeps team isn't GROWING in the mayor's proposed budget, inaccurately claiming the city is "taking money away from that to put that toward homelessness shelter."

In recent years, Seattle historic preservation groups have: 🪜 blocked removing ladders at Gasworks where 3 have died 🅿️ blocked housing to keep a historic parking garage in Pioneer Square 🏠 blocked housing in wealthy neighborhoods because of "historic" Craftsmans 🚙 tried to keep cars in Pike Place

During the championship final, the crowd filled the plaza and spilled into the closed street. We do not read that as a capacity failure. We read it as demand evidence. The U District needs more room for people, and it needs it at the station.

I said at the Historic Board that anyone from the Munich Christmas Market or New Orleans Bourbon Street would say how important car barriers are. Seattle City Council Appointee Jonathan Kiehnau responded that mentioning those tragedies is “catastrophizing” and that it won’t happen here. 🫠👍

The Pike Place bureaucratic ecosystem is unlike any other in the city: a half-dozen boards and organizations with a little bit of power all pointing a gun at each other. At the end of the day, it's hard for city hall to rise above that.

@mayor.seattle.gov needs to override this. We can’t be taking backwards steps like this.

It pains me to say this. It reeeeeallly pains me to say this, but it looks like Pike Place under Katie Wilson is going to be worse than it was under Harrell.

I read the Pike Place Market Vehicle Access Pilot Evaluation Technical Memo. It's a great data source. But the UW Urban Freight Lab's recommendation to make access control seasonal is 1) unsupported by evidence and 2) based solely on (perceived) sales without consideration of other community values.

Great spot! They have a really lovely back porch for food and drinks, which they are banned by law from using, due to “neighbor complaints”. Unless it has changed since I last went, they are not allowed to use half of their total space. @council.seattle.gov

I’m getting news that Bellingham has permanantly repealed their parking minimums. Their initial pilot years ago paved the way for much bigger reforms. Great leadership and organizing through and through. 🍾

Upzoning near transit is good, upzoning everywhere is best. Our transit routes are not set in stone, we can move them and add more!
