Following the #HayliGubbi eruption, our paper on the Erta Ale dike of Jun-Jul is finally out. InSAR, optical data and seismicity showed the temporal evolution of the intrusion and the interaction of magmatic sources, including a sill inflation in Hayli Gubbi. @earth-science.bsky.social #geoscience
Frontiers | Segmented dike intrusion linked to multi-level magma storage during and before the 2025 eruption at Erta Ale (East Africa)

The Hayli Gubbi tephra has been sampled. These are photos from my sampling expedition on 24 Nov with the University of Semera from around 10 km north of Hayli Gubbi @sorcerinsar.bsky.social @alarosa.bsky.social
An eruption from the #HayliGubbi volcano in #Ethiopia resulted in a large ash cloud, visible here from space. 🌋 This impressive view was seen 36,000km above Earth by our Meteosat-12 satellite on 23 November at 13:40 UTC.
Activity at Hayli Gubbi began in July when there was an eruption at Erte Ale. Magma propagated 30 km south passing under Hayli Gubbi. Since then, there has been a small plume, quasi-continuous SO2 emissions and uplift. Details in @uk-comet.bsky.social event response report: tinyurl.com/y3nfdfj8

An explosive #eruption of Hayli Gubbi #volcano, located SE of Erta'Ale in the Afar Rift (Ethiopia), began at ~08:30 UTC on Nov 23. Eruption onset was fortuitously captured by a @planet.com overpass at 08:31 UTC. Hayli Gubbi has no record of Holocene eruptions. Toulouse VAAC reporting ash to ~15 km.

So long #iavcei25 - thanks for all the inspiration, the conversations, scenery and the volcanic 🌋🌋 heat! ❤️☄️♨️♨️
Are they being 🌋 or trying to spell "Bristol"... who knows... either way, a fantastic week of science from our current Masters students all the way to our Head of School! @volcanojenni.bsky.social @alisonrust.bsky.social @pyroclasticpete.bsky.social @julietbiggs.bsky.social @ednadualeh.bsky.social
Most of the University of Bristol Volcanology Research group finishing up a VERY hot week in Geneva for the #IAVCEI2025 @iavcei.bsky.social conference - the biggest gathering of volcanologists in the world every few years! Well done team! 👏🏼 🌋
I had a lot of fun at the poster session last night! It inspired lots of new ideas. Thanks to everyone who came by to help me decide what my next step should be. #worm25

Sadly, it's the final day of @esa.int #LPS25 in Vienna. There are are still lots of interesting sessions to attend, including talks by @julietbiggs.bsky.social and Luke Bateson (@bgs.ac.uk) on using AI for monitoring natural hazards, @ednadualeh.bsky.social and Camilla Medici. Full schedule below:
Day 3 at #lps25 wrapped up! Lots of COMET talks and posters to see…. and a little COMET group photo of those we could gather during the focaccia break. On to day 4 now!
100,000 orbits! The radar satellite #TerraSARX has circled Earth 100,000 times, delivering high-resolution radar data for volcanoes (and other sites of course). A milestone in space-based Earth observation leading to exciting research at #GFZ !
Day 1 of #LPS25 was poster day for me! A non-stop session filled with lots of interesting chats about our work (and beyond). Missed it? No worries - I’ll be giving a rapid-fire 5min talk on the same topic during the Living Planet Fellowship session Friday morning 👀
It's been a great start to the @esa.int Living Planet Symposium 2025! #lps25 If you're in Vienna, join us at the poster session this afternoon (see below) and to hear about "Routine Global Volcano Monitoring Using Sentinel-1 Data and the LiCSAlert Algorithm", presented by @geoandyhooper.bsky.social
Preparing for #LPS25 by putting together some beautiful images from the Sentinel-3 mission. Check out all these wonderful pictures of our planet, all taken by S3 within the last 24 hours! Nice example of the excellent collaboration between @esa.int , @eumetsat.int and @ec.europa.eu!
📢 #LPS25 Highlight! 📢 Swing by the Poster Area (X5) to explore SENSE’s Megan Udy’s captivating work: “Remote Sensing Analysis of Forest Disturbance and Recovery at Volcanoes Worldwide” 🗓️ Monday 23 June | 🕠 17:45–19:00 📍 From eruptions to regrowth—don’t miss this global view from space!
Hello, Bluesky! 🤗 After a little post-shyness, I’m jumping in with 2 weeks of conference adventures (or at least the train journey to them)! First stop: #lps25! 🚆Bristol → London → Amsterdam → Vienna🚆
Dark Emu in full flight, winter solstice night. The dark Coal Sack nebula under the Southern Cross forms the emu's head. The glowing area at the emu's feet (near the tree) marks the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. A beautiful treasure in our sky. June 21st 2025 #astrophotography
