This from Magali Billen, UC Davis: Dr. Don Turcotte passed away yesterday. He was 92 years old. he was surrounded by family. His granddaughter had wanted to read something to Don in the hospital so his son suggested “Geodynamics” - she was reading to him in his final moments. ⚒️

Here's the earth science feed: Highly recommend muting the automated accounts though if you want to use it - I love LastQuake, etc. but it tends to swamp the humans, so I mute it and go there manually as needed.

This is a pretty decent sized one - It looks like you have to be added to a list for this one too, so contact the feed owner, and then use the hashtags or emoji in the feed description

You'd think that a volcanic eruption powerful enough to cool the climate would be easy to find. But for nearly 200 years scientists have searched for the "mystery volcano" that erupted in 1831. Recently, ash and debris in ice cores led researchers to a likely candidate in the Kuril Islands 🧪

GNS have confirmed they are cutting over forty science roles including in areas like risk modelling and geohazards, in service of “improved” profits. This is what a commercial model for public good science does. The damage to our capability and reputation will be long-lasting.
