Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

It does feel like an insane moment when a company is regulating “cruelty” towards its AI systems in such crudely anthropomorphic terms, while the worth of whole peoples is still treated as negotiable, live-streamed executions are being discussed, & the sentience of animals is still largely ignored

The way I know academic twitter is dead is that this deranged scandal where a Claude-brained prof who published 200 papers this year attacked one of the people who pointed it out by sending an AI-generated review of his work to his boss and also being racist, is getting 1/10 the traction I’d expect

AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP. Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down. "AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago. We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.
