Generally, I would recommend 4 pedals (a delay pedal, a chorus pedal, a reverb pedal, and a distortion / or fuzz / or overdrive pedal) for starters. You might also consider an all-in-one option (here's an example). Boss, MXR, and Ibanez are some big names in pedals and anything you get by them will probably be decent. There are also endless small boutique pedal companies who make all sorts of fun pedals with fun names and designs. I really love Death by Audio in Brooklyn. The pedals are pricey, but it might be fun to take a peak. Their demo videos are a treat.
Some specific ideas:
A "big muff" or "swollen pickle" are classics for fuzz.
The Ibanez "Tube Screamer" overdrive pedal is one of the most classic / popular pedals you can get.
The electro harmonix "holy grail" is a classic for reverb.
I think that the electro harmonix "small clone" is the chorus pedal that was used on nirvana's "come as you are."
The MXR carbon copy delay pedal is great, but there are lots of options here.
