Climate Scientist at Met Office and University of Exeter. Author of Hot Air: The Inside Story of the Battle Against Climate Change Denial

I talk about my extraordinary experience in Moscow in 2004 in the latest edition of the Totally Cooked podcast as well as other aspects of my career in climate science. Includes extra details to what I wrote about in Hot Air including the Russian prostitutes. 21centuryweather.org.au/totally-cook...

Peter Stott: Heatwaves, Show Trials & Climate Denial

Climate scientist Peter Stott on pioneering extreme-weather attribution, a Soviet-style Moscow show trial, Climategate and the fight against denial.

Two extraordinary charts from today’s PISA test results: 1) School test scores continue to collapse internationally, underscoring how this is no longer a Covid effect but sustained decline. Those falls in reading and maths are equivalent to about two years of lost schooling.

Just read Togetherness by @rowhoop.bsky.social (in two days). Really enjoyable, informative and profound, including for my thinking about the climate crisis: "We are symbiotic creatures at the deepest levels of our cells, living in a world entirely shaped and powered by symbiotic processes".

I’ve had a fabulous time in gorgeous weather hiking the 4-day Kesch trek from hut to hut in Switzerland - the Swiss mountains are my happy place - but I grieve for the disappearing ice seen here from the Kesch hut. The glaciers are disappearing thanks to our fossil fuel emissions.

He is literally saying "reality is not my ideology." He has gone to war against science; science as a description of reality will win in the long run because science as reality doesn't go away even if you close your eyes and yell.

"The National Academies seem dead set on using taxpayer dollars to push their radical climate agenda and influence court decisions, but not on my watch. My office flagged their fraudulent behavior back in February and gave them the chance to make things right, but instead they doubled down and created yet another biased
document to force their ideology on Americans,"
- Attorney General Austin Knudsen

In the very week that after a long deep dive rabbit hole (books/podcasts/counselling) I discover at age 64 that I have an ADHD brain and that awareness explains and helps me a whole lot, Channel 4 do a whole documentary to supposedly demonstrate it's all a myth and I'm a fraud.

Both funny and acerbic oh and enlightening , here is @drdeanburnett.bsky.social ‘s review of The Guardian review of ADHD Myth? theneuroscienceofeverydaylife.substack.com/p/a-review-o...

29th August 1985 - An excited Michael Fish gets to deploy the rarely seen red number as the temperature gets up to an incredible 26 degrees in London!

Past greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from burning fossil fuels, means that peak temperatures in the UK today are hotter (by around 3°C) than they would otherwise have been. Future burning of fossil fuels means heatwave temperatures will get hotter and hotter until we reach net-zero emissions.

Temperatures have now provisionally exceeded 37°C 🌡️ Before 2026, the UK had recorded 37°C or higher on only six occasions. This year alone, we've already reached that mark three times.

A table of top temperatures so far. The highest currently at 37.6°C at Charlwood.

European summers aren't what they used to be! Grey curve is the climate of 1950-90. Every coloured line is a summer since 1991. Every one since 2005 sits beyond the 95th percentile of the curve. This isn't a shifting #climate. It's already a new one! 🤯🥵 Plot inspired by Barriopedro et al. 2011

Distribution of European summer temperature anomalies, June to August, over 25°W-40°E, 35-70°N, land only, the region used by Barriopedro et al., relative to 1961-1990, from ERA5. Grey bars show the 41 summers from 1950 to 1990, with a normal curve fitted through them, centred near zero. Coloured vertical lines show every summer from 1991 to 2025, shaded yellow through dark red by year, and almost all of them fall to the right of the grey distribution. The ten warmest are labelled, with 2024 furthest right at 2.74°C and 2022 next at 2.54°C. A dotted line marks the 95th percentile of the 1950-1990 distribution at 0.76°C.

Both run long, which is fine, since alt text has no practical limit and screen reader users benefit from the detail.

I had a great weekend at Womad where I experienced the extraordinary talent and "fierce political anger" from powerful female musicians including Daniela Mercury from Brazil, Kankawa Nagarra from Australia, Oumou Sangare from Mali and Ganna from Ukraine. www.theguardian.com/culture/2026...

Womad festival review – hugely welcome return of joyous planet-spanning music fest

In a new home after a year off, there’s a thread of fierce political anger running alongside the spirited musical performances – including standout sets from Barrington Levy and Daniela Mercury

Yet again tonight's BBC coverage of drought and fires fails to mention cause. News At Ten reporting by Justin Rowlatt omits to say the words "due to burning of fossil fuels". Continued refusal of BBC to call out cause of climate change is why we wrote to editors pressgazette.co.uk/news/climate...

Climate scientists say news coverage ignores cause of UK heatwave

Connection between greenhouse emissions and extreme heat in UK 'indisputable'.
