More and more convinced that hyperscale data centres are to our age what cars and highways were a century ago: A wrong technological choice to be avoided. And by "wrong" I mean anti-social, violent, wasteful, community-destroying, planet-destroying, etc).
It's really hard to convey just how massive the scale of legislation has been to target trans people. From a few dozen pieces of legislation in 2015 to over a thousand in 2025. It started with sports bans in 2020 and now we're here. it was never about sports.
My heart is full of hope because teaching and learning critical AI literacy with participants was and is an act of resistance in this political context.
☀️ 📚 And it's a wrap! I am grateful for working with our amazing Critical AI Literacy team @marentierra.bsky.social @olivia.science @altibel.bsky.social @joostvossers.bsky.social this week. I learnt a lot myself as well! 🙏✨ www.ru.nl/en/research/... 8/🧵

☀️ 📚 Day 5, by using what they learnt throughout the week, participants developed and presented novel ideas for resisting and reclaiming. Formats ranged from traditional presentation to theatre play and game design. See below an illustration of the latter (scroll up for more context). 7/🧵
☀️ 📚 Day 4, after restorative time, free-form discussions & reflections on the movie, we joined a session from @marentierra.bsky.social’s Sustainable AI course, where students presented vlogs 🎬 that they had created for their final projects. So impressed & proud by what our AI students made! 6/🧵
☀️ 📚 In the evening of Day 3, we had a screening of the documentary film "Ghost in the Machine" 🎬 This event was co-organized with students from the School of AI. The audience was students from our BSc course Sustainable AI & MSc course Bias in AI, in addition to Summer School participants. 5/🧵

☀️ 📚 Day 3 of the Summer School, after @marentierra.bsky.social’s eye opening lecture about unsustainability of AI and the global supply chain, @altibel.bsky.social gave an inspiring and heartwarming lecture on reclaiming our skills and the importance of reading and writing by ourselves. 4/🧵
I talked about Reclaiming Our #Reading & #Writing Skills at the Critical AI Literacies summer school w @irisvanrooij.bsky.social & @marentierra.bsky.social, on how literacy is related to liberation & empowerment for example w publications from autonomous #presses. 📚 So nice to connect w lovely ppl 🥰
☀️ 📚 Day 2 of the Summer School, @marentierra.bsky.social lectured about critical intersectional perspectives on AI and I lectured about AI and cognitive science. Each of us bringing distinct but complementary frames for resistance. 3/🧵
☀️ 📚 Day 1 of the Summer School, we had the inspiring and thought-provoking keynote by @olivia.science, titled: “What is AI, and why is it harmful?” You can watch it here 🎬 🍿 www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi85... 2/🧵

Sure, LLMs are useful for: 1. Fraud 2. Plagiarism 3. Cognitive off-loading Which of those use-cases are you promoting?
every time you click "Dismiss" and "Do not show me this again" on some pop-up AI bullshit, satya nadella and jensen huang each shed a single tear
“We’ve invented a magic computer. It uses all of the earth’s resources, we’ve spent trillions on it and it’s the sole growth area of the US economy.” “What does it do?” “We were hoping you could tell us.”
Delicious to me
Are you anti-AI because you believe our institutions delivered democratic accountability and some approximation of fairness that AI has ruined, or because you recognise AI as the amplification of existing injustices and structural cruelty?
kinda proud that my middle schooler sent this to me 🤣
Tell me we should trust AI to give us the facts. Tell me it's a future we can put our faith in. Come at me. I'm right here, waiting.

All of the companies that make the software I use are increasing their prices, to account for an "investment" in AI. I'm sat here imagining how my clients would feel if I added 30% to each invoice, because I "really got into gambling".
an important read for at least 2 reasons: 1. shows how big tech operates on intuitions and vibes and not rigorous research 2. this is a masterpiece in how to breakdown complex scientific concepts in simple language and elegant pros that captivate the lay reader taranis.ie/datacenters-...
Datacenters in space are a terrible, horrible, no good idea.
There is a rush for AI companies to team up with space launch/satellite companies to build datacenters in space. TL;DR: It's not going to work.
