One author of similar impact for me was rosemary sutcliffe- her Bronze Age boys adventure “warrior scarlet” exploded my brain, and I’ve still to read anything else by her! I can only imagine her Roman era books rule as well

Books unearthed whilst moving - ellis peters wrote some absolute bangers of medieval detective work that were a huge comfort and joy to me over the past two years (I found three in a thrift shop while on a road trip and I would gladly devour all the rest should I find em)

Books unearthed whilst moving - this is a marvellous surreal piece of posthuman action adventure, a society of immortal Hindu inspired space colonists who eventually ascent to godhood. It gets a bit too superhero at the end, but most of this book fucking whips

I don’t think I’m ever going to get the appeal of pivoting to video for podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for 20 years, and never once have I thought, my God, I need to SEE these people! I’m on a walk or doing the dishes, I don’t need video.

"Huh, I did not see THAT one coming!" was what I said constantly while reading "Grip of the Kombinat" by @simonroy.bsky.social & Damon Gentry. It's quite the ride through a wacky scifi universe. I had quite a lot of laughs, would recommend.

Thanks to this post by @simonroy.bsky.social I went and read "The Space Merchants" by Frederik Pohl & C M. Kornbuth. I'd describe it as "Cyber Punk 'Mad Men'"? It is today a piece of retro futurism. But they hit on the spot a lot. Very recommended.

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.
