It's not 1536, but Anne Boleyn has taken over the news. Recently a team of computer scientists, electrical engineers and a historical novelist think they have discovered the “true face” of Anne (& her mother) by applying AI-based computational facial recognition to Holbein sketches. The catch? /1

They’re at it again. None of this is valuable historical research. It’s about exploiting historical artifacts and historians to develop computer vision further and to make a soft cultural argument for surveillance tech. This nonsense has been going on since c2010.

A 16th-Century Sketch Claims to Depict Anne Boleyn. A.I. Says It’s Her Mom.
Using facial-recognition technology, scholars have concluded that a 500-year-old drawing labeled “Anna Bollein Queen” more likely showed her mother, Elizabeth Howard.

We are the LARGEST union in trade publishing history, and we want better for our workers in order to make a sea change for creatives everywhere. Let's take a stand together against the existential threats to the arts, whether stagnating wages, the AI slop machine, and destructive layoffs.

Start of article: "Employees of Hachette Book Group announced they have unionized with Washington-Baltimore News-Guild Local 32035 of the AFL-CIO. They have signed up a supermajority of 600 workers, making it the largest union in trade publishing history. The union says it is seeking better benefits, protections, and rights for workers, as well as increased equity, transparency, and agency in the workplace."

It is my pleasure to finally announce that my colleagues and I at Hachette Book Group are unionizing! We're asking for any authors, artists, and fellow workers of the world to stand in solidarity with us, and sign our open letter of support at hachetteworkers.com/open-letter

I make this cover for an upcoming book where the creepy doll imagery is a metaphor for a dark capitalist cloning industry, and a week later my boss is like 'ok we acquired a new book. it's about a haunted doll.' ...so I've got two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

cover of Precious Children by Mary G. Thompson. Cover images is a tile of doll heads, the central of which has glowing eyescover of The Porcelain Sisters by Daryl Gregory. Closeup of a porcelain doll face that is cracked in many places.

If you're a baseball player who can catch, slide, and run, but you can't hit the ball, you can: a) Practice on your own (teammates, ball machine) b) Hire a good coach c) Switch sports Notice how there is no d) Put your jersey on a robot every time it's your turn at bat (then lie about it)

I've seen people trying to defend it today by saying "No, no, I just use it to brainstorm, bounce ideas, I do the actual writing" and with all the kindness in the world I need to tell you: if there is a stage of writing you are not good at, you need to get good, not use the plagiarism machine.

I keep seeing "all authors use AI, the real issue is they're being forced to be sneaky about it" headlines. Full stop No. This is a lie peddled for normalization. It's schoolyard-level pressure tactics "C'mon, all the cool kids are already doing it. We won't tell. It's fine. We're on your side."
