"...Little public things—like designing postage stamps or National Park Service photographer stipends or spending the pittance of pre-DOGE NEA dollars on public programming—did something to cohere a nation. Everyday aesthetics made place."

"An essential state role, parallel to provisioning basic services like education and healthcare, is endowing a wide open aesthetic field of form and meaning and collective sensibility." www.artnews.com/art-in-ameri...

After seeing so many elites—in business, media, politics, more—eagerly jump on board with Trumpism fascism, or weakly acquiesce to it, the public is craving leaders who act like this awfulness is serious and bad. Yes, the public. The real public. A majority of the people, not only right-wing volk.

Instead of shying away from the values of democracy, pluralism, and rights—as many consultants and pundits urge—Ossoff asserts those values. Look at what he’s gotten so much praise for: calling a white nationalist a “white nationalist” and treating that as bad. As a reason to vote against someone.

NEW: Staff at HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette told @adamm0rgan.bsky.social AI is infiltrating their workplaces, from generating cover art and back cover copy, to publicity materials, to rejection emails, as execs tell junior staff to "champion" the tech. www.wired.com/story/book-p...

Book Publishers Are Quietly Using More AI. Staff Are Revolting

Workers at three major publishing houses tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

I get that this might be a nuanced issue, but when a Black woman is talking about how it feels to have white people collectively refer to the worst parts of themselves, as they wantonly indulge in them, as "being brown," idk maybe listen and think about it. "this isn't who we are" yes it is, tho.

Sorry but no, it is in fact notable that the US is doing something only very extremist regimes do. To willingly abandon “this isn’t who we are” as a response is to throw away a very powerful rhetorical weapon.

“Every protest in the 20th century found its way to the bathroom door. The gay rights movement, the Civil Rights movement, the women’s movement, the movement for rights for the unhoused & obviously trans rights" @sarahholder.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

How Public Toilets Explain America

A new book chronicles the troubled history of restroom access in US cities and shows how these spaces have always reflected and reinforced social inequality.

This new Sherrod Brown ad debunks a anti trans ad while tying the Republican senate candidate to Jeffrey Epstein. THIS is how you fight back against anti trans ads.

If you have ever read a book to a baby, you will realize it's not a linear experience. The baby wants to turn pages backward, wants to ask questions (if they're old enough), wants to examine the pages and get really excited if they can say "bear!" even if the word "bear!" is not on the page.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

X post from AI industry insider Alvin Sng :

My wife: Can you read our baby a book?
Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.
Me: I can train a voice model.
Parenting hits different when you work in Al.

Found the email I sent when I got accidentally added to the faculty listserv of an orthopedic surgery clinic and nobody would remove me so I sent this email to all faculty/staff/med students and they removed me almost immediately

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.
