I read recently that the prolonged rehashing of 1980s kid media is now called "courting the grandpa market," and, yeah. Gen-Alpha doesn't give a shit about Transformers, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, He-Man, Star Wars. Those movies are for 58-year-olds.

A critic isn't "trustworthy" because they always tell their audience what they want or expect to hear. That's not trustworthy, that's suspicious. A critic is trustworthy if they're not afraid to give their audience their honest opinion, even if nobody else agrees with them or wants to hear it.

Listen… I was maybe 12 or 13 when I saw this for the first time, and it rewired my brain. A straight up, unapologetic horror film, that was still taking adult themes seriously, and doing so with a jaw dropping visual imagination. Still can’t believe it was only a $1 million budget.

I feel that the phenomenon of "armchair executives" contributed to the thinking that A.I. can producer real art. For the better part of 20 years, casual filmgoers have been talking about movies and TV shows in terms of ratings, B.O., and brand viability, not necessarily story or character.
