I rarely take pictures as I often feel harried in a group but I took a few during a visit to Loch Lomond a few months ago. I think the picture of the flower came out remarkably well. It rained the entire time which I loved and it was at least a realistic view of my country for a visiting US friend.

No, an inadequate sandbox meant that a powerful and unpredictable computer program was set loose on the open internet by the company that designed it. I don't think it's especially fraught tbh! "AI" coding assistants are built off of the blatant theft of the entire open-source code ecosystem without permission nor respect to their licensing terms. Fuck that shit.

You’re the sensible centrist government watching this take place. The far right pulls off votes to independents and fringe parties from you, the very sensible moderates whose managerial capitalism has actually caused the degradation they ascribe to foreigners. But they’re small enough in number that you dismiss them, and continue with the self-same policies which actually impact their voters’ lives. Next time, they do well enough that you take notice. It is at this point you enter the spiral that has redrawn the electoral map of the Western world for the past decade. You say you recognise ‘legitimate concerns’ and take a tougher line on, say, refugees. You accept the far right’s entirely false premise that immigrants increase crime, that the housing crisis is due to migrants rather than your own bad policies, or that foreigners are swamping the health service, rather than holding it up with their bare hands in the face of your own drastic underfunding of the system. And you become less popular. You, the sensible moderate, continue to slide in the polls against the very parties whose policies you were trying to steal. A sizeable number of your own base are appalled, and you have failed to impress a single racist. Because everywhere, from France to Germany to the Netherlands to the UK, as with Fanta and its supermarket imitators, it turns out people prefer the original to the copy. You’ve driven away your traditional base, while sanitising the racism of the far right for low information voters, who now consider them more reasonable. You have moved the sensible middle position toward the far right — where you now stand, boxed in, by the ghouls you’ve just baptised as moderates. And the slide continues. Because you cannot placate these people. You cannot reach an end. Round up every refugee in camps and they’ll want the next cruelty. Their concerns are not about society, the economy or public safety, they’re an ever-moving target of fear and hatred that cannot be sated, it has to be challenged. And now it’s too late, because you thought that you — and you alone! — would be the first centrist to steal the fascist’s lunch by agreeing with them rather than fighting them with every fibre of your being.

No: it isn’t “genuinely bad news for the far right” that the framing & salience of its pet subject has been adopted by the entire political-media system. That assumption mistakes the far right‘s demands as genuine & limited, & thus manageable, rather than being a proxy or wedge issue for much worse.

The most important thing Harry Potter learns is that he's wealthy. It's a book series where learning magic allows the hero gain a deeper understanding of his universe and his responsibilities to it, but it's a Blairite universe where that responsibility is to become a cop. Like, these books suck.

This is a really important statement regarding AI/LLM usage. What might be cheap, free and convenient to you often has a cost elsewhere. In this case, money and time for Codeberg. In the same way 1-day shipping from Amazon increases road fatalities for the residents they built the warehouse next to.

The development team of none Using LLMs to work with your code gives you a kick of adrenaline. You can develop at a rapid pace, build things as if you had a large team. Only that you have none. In fact, you are (often) alone, working with a statistical machine that turns energy into code. It seems like many ‘vibe coders’ don't realize that they don't actually have a community around them. They build projects as if they had, and spend resources accordingly. We see projects having a lot of code activity, heavy CI/CD testing, frequent and large release binaries. Sometimes, it feels like the amount of supported platforms exceeds the amount of actual users. To us, it seems ridiculous to see projects with a single developer and virtually no users consuming as much or even more resources than some of the largest community projects on Codeberg, which operate frugal with CI/CD and storage resources. We do not believe it is reasonable for Codeberg to invest our precious donation money into hosting of large ghost projects.

I'm playing through Dragon Age Origins and reminded how how DA Veilguard got caught up in nonsense culture war stuff. Specifically, 'its good except they *had* to have a non-binary character', Origins has a non-binary party member in 2009 and they are great. Been part of the series since it started.

I stayed up late to finish Assassin's Creed Odyseey's DLC after a few years. A few good moments but dragged on for 100+ hours of story and the ending of all the content tells me to play a different game with a different protagonist, Valhalla, and then hard cut to the store to upsell me on Shadows.
