This matches what I'm seeing, talking to trans people around the country. Especially as the Democratic candidates' transphobia trickles down to liberals otg excusing it in our neighborhoods, workplaces, etc. There is an vast rage combined with a deep (and very justified) sense of betrayal.

There are people, even some trans people, who think that we can give up sports to appease bigots. That if we give up on sports, this all goes away. That is a lie. I have reported on this for years, and EVERY state that passed a sports ban as a moderate compromise has gone on to pass worse.

There was a time I thought Jesse Singal was, like me, an honest journalist who came at trans coverage from a cis-centric perspective that sometimes led to outsized concerns about rare or nonexistent problems, but was also really trying to get to the truth of things. But that was 8 years ago.

I would suspect this is much closer to Richard Spencer disavowing white supremacist terrorists on camera on his way to Charlottesville. Singal's role in the movement requires certain gestures, and it's possible that he's legitimately not aware but I'm not convinced

The fun trick here is that merely existing as a trans person and wanting to use the bathroom in public makes you an "activist" in their minds. it's a very fungible and transferrable category.
