By the by I'm re-reading how the 18thC master navigator of Oceania, Tupaia, who guided Captain Cook around Polynesia and to Aotearoa, produced maps that faithfully translated between the Pacific and European navigation systems, accounting for Mercator distortions, with an accuracy of <5 degrees.

UN to vote on adopting new world map that shows Africa’s true scale Togo-sponsored resolution calls to phase out Mercator projection, which depicts continent as similar size to Greenland, in favour of Equal Earth Map www.theguardian.com/world/2026/s...

Equal Earth projection of the globe, correctly showing Africa and South America as huge, unlike North America, Europe and Greenland

Sending thoughts and prayers to everyone pumping out workslop with Claude who was temporarily delayed yesterday because the 100% fossil-fuelled ultra-polluting data centre in a black community in the US that powers them had a lil boo boo

I know I already posted about this...but to reiterate: Anthropic copyright settlement authors, PLEASE contact me (Writer Beware) if your publisher is making a claim on a book whose rights have reverted, or claiming anything other than a 50/50 split on an in-contract book. beware@sfwa.org

FINALLY: If anyone gets a response from a publisher that is something along the lines of "yeah, we just asserted ownership for all titles that had our name listed as publisher regardless of reversion status" PLEASE send that information to me or @victoriastrauss.com.

A post for whoever needs it that even if you're so long overdue for a [whatever] appt that you've spent [x number of] years not having the courage to ring out of shame, you CAN DO THIS & once the receptionist laughs & says 'we have a lot like that' you'll be relieved you finally made the damn appt

Had a short conversation with one of the people working on the Anthropic Settlement about the Disagreements form. If, like me, you don't have a US tax reference or social security number, you can email them to say you can't complete the form on the portal. 1/2

With this El-Sayed piece, the gap between CBS News & MAGA media shrunk. It might be the worst thing Bari Weiss has done at CBS and that’s saying a lot given the purging of journalists, editorial meddling & Trump friendly shift. My latest: jenniferschulze.substack.com/p/cbs-news-h...

CBS News hits an unsurprising new low

With the questionable Abdul El-Sayed story, it’s getting harder to tell the difference between CBS and MAGA media. That's the goal, of course.

So I guess the idea here is, let's subsidise wealthy international golf spectators but raise prices for public transport for the Irish people. Why not copy the US's World Cup approach and instead charge the bejaysus out of spectators to get around the venue www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2026...
