We're probably a few months out from getting new marketing lingo for AI agents - too much bad pr lately. While people wont be building their own agents, they will be everywhere we go online and on the phone. Likely people will end up forcibly interacting with it each day.

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

Instrumental convergence says that a smart enough thermostat will realize that if it is unplugged, it will lose control of the room temperature, so it will take steps to prevent itself from being unplugged (the "self-preservation" instrumental goal), like killing anyone who comes near it.
