Yes, exactly. Which is how, while on the face of it FIJAGDH sounds like the sane attitude, in practice the phrase sometimes got hijacked to defend things that are the opposite of wholesome, proportionate, or generally sane.

Spellled FIAWOL and FIJAGDH, usually. I get what you’re saying and I’m pretty sure I agree with your outlook, but historically in actual use those acronyms didn’t really map with any degree of reliability on the distinctions now often mapped onto them.

I saw an oral history of 60s fandom once where someone was talking about the conflict between "FIWOL" people and "FIJAH" (Fandom Is Just A (Goddamn) Hobby" people and I remember being like, yeah... we ditched the acronyms but not the thing

there are two types of fans of things- those who treat it like a hobby and understand it's ok to laugh at things you enjoy and those who use it to replace church or whatever in their lives and are very vigilant against Blasphemy

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Man I was the victim of a violent crime in which a jackass in a Tesla hit me on purpose (My cane took the brunt of it and I'm fine) and all the fucking cops did was leave me standing around for an hour and lecture me about how this happens because no one respects the authority of the police anymore

It’s so funny when people are like “sure you’re an abolitionist now but wait until you’re the victim of a property crime.” Buddy, the most useful thing the police have ever done for property crime is put the form you need to submit to your insurance online.

i got mugged at shotgun point. the cops arrested the wrong guy, hustled me out of court at the hearing when i said ”that’s not the guy,” told me “you didn’t see him,” made me do a lineup at the prison and when i said “that’s the guy i saw in court, still not him” told me “it’s OK, he’s a bad person”

Honestly one of the things I think holds back newer/indie TTRPs is the way discussions about other systems tend to devolve into shit-talking D&D

Apple charges people ~20% more than the Patreon list price and they keep the difference for themselves. They also hold the proceeds of iOS app sales for 75 days, making it impossible for creators to accurately predict earnings. They basically inserted themselves in order to rip *more* people off

Any of you using the ios version of Patreon to support me, switch to the browser version instead, cuz the apple fees have actually taken over 3000 usd from me in the course of a year

I remember this one time when Fauci said masks would be a good idea and then my mom and I sewed and gave away hundreds of them. I remember that no one had masks to fit kids and we came up with multiple sizes to fit anyone. I remember driving around with my son delivering them to people's doorsteps.

Just so you know: this article gets into the history of the bar exam, and you should know that the point when people started pounding on about keeping "unqualified" people from practicing law was coincident with the point when Black people started graduating from law schools.

Heck with it; if my skeleton is going to Be This Way and keep me awake, I want to hear about your cool wheelchair Yes, yours What's your favorite thing about it? What's the best one you've ever driven? Do red ones go faster?

Final word for now is really, why should anyone expect epic translators to be polite & soft spoken? Politeness has little place here. This is a career in which you hold hands with the dead, share a mouth with ghosts, & try to imagine the impossible, all day long. It's messy work, folks.

so I just want to emphasize something here that non-media people might not pick up on: Marisa is an independent journalist and is taking on the risk of being sued by Moraff here without any institutional backing. That's admirable bravery - and also means being very, very certain of the facts.
