TIL: U.S. born women married to non-citizen men lost their U.S. citizenship in 1907, until and unless their husbands became citizens. This was reversed in 1922, but then those women who had not become citizens again through their husband's naturalization had to reapply independently for it.

The year 1907 saw the creation of a law that had a strange effect on some married couples. The Expatriation Act decreed that any woman who married a foreigner would lose her American citizenship and take on that of her husband.
