Fragmented nature of power, authority, and delivery in Westminster, combined with a culture of short-termism has been very damaging for the UK. Departments have no shared budgets. When one Dept saves, costs are moved to other parts of the system. Some recommendations for @andyburnham.bsky.social 👇

Finishing this, the lessons for Burnham bit is too important not to provide in full. This is not simply about the Treasury, but the challenge of improving things in a complex, fragmented system. Services or outcomes that used to rest in one place are now divided and scattered.

Good piece. A thread on some comments I made yesterday on Times Radio. Two things can be true at the same time: 1. It’s very bad to have 60,000 people storm a border, and 70+ deaths. 2. European leaders' responses were opportunistic and disproportionate, and made incidents like this more likely.
