Remembering, for no particular reason in particular, the Chapo bit years ago where Christman used Cheesecake Factory as a synechdoche for the "Western Culture" Americans would go full Hitlerite against the rest of the world in defense of

I've read essentially this same article about Tobacco and Cancer (1980s), Vermiculite and health (1990s), Fossil Fuels and Climate Change (2000s), and now Plastics and Microplastics (2020s). Maybe letting industries have a say in regulation and the studies that observe them isn't such a great idea.

🚨"Internal memos among company scientists and executives obtained by The Times reveal that for at least half a century, the plastics industry has been aware of and concerned about the potential for microplastic contamination in the human body."

wow how evil and nationalistic. hey do any other countries have an entire political class who uniformly are required to repeat ad nauseum that their country is unique and special and is the only one capable of 'protecting' or 'saving' 'freedom' in the rest of the world?

The idea that Russia is a great power, with a special place in the world by virtue of its unique civilisation, is absolutely central to Russian national identity. It's an ideology that Putin and those around him have pushed relentlessly.

Rationalism rocks. Love any philosophy that tells me: 1) My actions are moral if I help a greater quantity of future people than the real ones I harm 2) There is an infinite quantity of future people 3) Thus, it's essential that I make as much money as possible by doing things I already want to do

In less than 10 years the UK went from their conservatives implementing self-id to their liberals inflicting a nationwide trans bathroom ban. So you may understand why there are people worried about the US going the same way, especially with the consultant overlap between labor and democrats.

Americans are so full of Hitler particles they would rather spend six figures per hired goon of the state per year indefinitely to make it so they don't have to see a houseless person rather than spend six figures one time building a cheap housing unit that would make said person no longer unhoused

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?

Democrats said they wanted Joe Rogan of the Left, and everyone assumed it was an analogy, but what they actually meant was they wanted the Overton window moved such that Joe Rogan (and his stances in 2024) would *be* on the left

I maintain that consumer AI products would have been received very differently if they were launched with promises like, "You can query this to sort through your inbox of 50,000 emails" rather than "What if artists starved in the streets? :)"
