“There’s a fundamental contradiction between the tone Carney has struck at the summit and while globe-trotting, and the anger he showed this week after the Stelco news.” This is exactly correct. Another way of putting this is that Carney has been trying to run the old FDI playbook in a new world.…

Why laying off 500 workers at Hamilton's Stelco is an unpleasantly familiar warning for Mark Carney

From Stelco to Stellantis to shuttered factories, a pattern keeps repeating — and Carney's summit buzz won't fix it.

In addition to the utter disgust and fury I've been feeling towards the sorry excuses for men who raped that young woman at Cornell, she has me thinking of every woman in my life who has trusted me enough to share the story of her own rape. They all share something in common:

On this date in 1760, Major Robert Rogers visited the former site of Fort Rouille. He reported that there were “about 300 acres of cleared lands ... well timbered with large oaks, hickories, maples and some poplars. The soil is clay and the deer are extremely plentiful.”

One hang up I have about queer Canadian history is how the 1969 partial decriminalization is discussed. It is often discussed how 1969 didn't really decriminalize homosexuality but my issue is how the bravery of Everett George Klippert is so often erased from the story.

Parliament returned this week and the Liberal government wasted no time unveiling Bill C-39, which among other things would speed up the process of getting major projects started. Niigaan Sinclair shares what he thinks the bill is really about. Truth & Politics: youtu.be/3SLJuS2kfHo

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.

I don’t follow Andreessen particularly closely but every so often I get glimpses that suggest that he has pretty, pretty frustrating relationships with his wife and with his son

Used to work in a small cafe in Carlisle when I overheard a young man deliberating with his friend whether he should move to London or not and was waiting for a sign. I stuck London Calling on and the look he gave his friend stuck with me and I really hope he made it to London.

"Art, if you want a definition of it, is criminal action. It conforms to no rules. Not even its own. Anyone who experiences a work of art is as guilty as the artist. It is not a question of sharing the guilt. Each one of us gets all of it." - John Cage #quote

Premier of Manitoba Wab Kinew: "Release the Epstein files. Donald Trump is Jeffrey Epstein's best friend. The reason why we're at war in Iran and everyone's paying higher gas prices is because of the Epstein files."

He's doing racist revisionist history of a white supremacist who starved Indigenous children to death. Even by the standards of the time John A Macdonald shocked parliament by openly stating the "superiority of the aryan race" and that Indigenous and Asian people were a "different species"

Disturbing, offensive, but perhaps fitting that Carney is seeking (much like far-right groups!) to rehab Sir John A’s reputation into that of a Great Uniter, rather than someone who engaged in horrific crimes against Indigenous people and Chinese immigrants (in part to build this project!)

Critical essays that open on fiction are a gift for teaching, and this one is no exception. A little too far removed from the subject of my class this fall but strongly recommend for others to assign. In the current issue of Dissent.
