With Lowell continuing to churn along as a major hurricane, the central North Pacific has now produced more ACE than all seasons since 1988 except 1994, 2015, and 2018. In fact, 2026's ACE **to date** is nearly three times the 1991-2020 average **for the full season**.

Only 5 years since 1988 have produced more accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) by today's date in the central North Pacific, or west of 140°W, than 2026: 1994, 2006, 2015, 2018, and 2023. With NHC predicting that Lowell will become a strong hurricane, 2026 may soon beat 2023 and 2006.

No two tropical cyclones are alike, yet the latest NHC forecast for Hurricane Lowell to potentially turn northward in a few days reminds me of Hurricane Iniki (1992). Lowell's possible turn is still many days out, so guidance will evolve. Stay tuned to nhc.noaa.gov for the latest information!

The ocean near Tropical Storm Marie is quite warm -- nearly 30°C in the topmost 40 meters according to recent Argo float observations. Though warm water implies ample energy available to the storm, what the storm does with that energy also depends on atmospheric conditions as it treks northwestward.

Though the storm's convective strength and coverage varied overnight, there's been a recent burst of deep convection near Edouard's center. Near-shore intensification like this is such a headache-inducing scenario ahead of landfall. 😣

Radar and satellite shows that Edouard is strengthening rather quickly and is probably stronger than when the last recon pass was made. Now seeing base velocity values at times approaching 70 mph aloft.

A slight (level 2 of 4) risk of flash flooding is forecast across much of Arizona on Sunday and Monday, per @nws.noaa.gov. 62 people were evacuated via air in the Grand Canyon yesterday, and footbridges were destroyed. More of these kinds of impacts are possible the next two days.

13 tropical cyclones were named Dolly before today: - North Atlantic, 9 (first in 1953, the first year of NHC naming) - Western Pacific, 1 (in 1946, the year Dolly Parton was born) - South Indian, 2 - South Pacific, 1 Why a high Atlantic count? Because "Dolly" is on the 6-year rotating name lists.

Dolly Parton is credited in at least 37 research papers on the COVID vaccine, including the first phase I trial results published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2020.

Hard to believe that Dolly is gone...and also hard to believe that through sheer coincidence, her name is next up on the Atlantic hurricane list. (As noted by @wxdam.com, the name "Dolly" replaced Diana when the latter was retired in 1990, and it's been used every six years since 1996.)
