We're already starting to see another pronounced hot weather signal emerge for 2nd week July, with the potential for v. hot conditions to return. You might think "surely we couldn't have another high-end heatwave so soon?" but the trouble is, extreme weather can load the dice...
In light of the extreme early season heat we've been having, we must ask ourselves the question, how much worse could it get? It was a pleasure to discuss our recent work and how to prepare for more extreme heat with @nytimes.com Read more here: www.nytimes.com/2026/06/23/c...

More likely than not, we're going to be talking about central-western Europe, mainly France, having experienced two high-end heatwaves before July & with one of those having been in May. Climate change has* increased the probability of* this extreme scenario (not caused it).

In our new highlighted paper in Earth System Dynamics, we map out the global atmospheric river network along with its main hubs, highways and basins! What emerges is a surprisingly structured system that we think could open up new perspectives on atmospheric connectivity💨🌧️ doi.org/10.5194/esd-...

Can’t say I recall ever seeing this before. More than half of France’s 30+ year-old weather stations set/tied their monthly high-temperature record in May 2026. Some did so as many as 9 times. Unprecedented to witness this level of heat so early in the year.
Peak El Niño median forecast is now forecast ONI at +3.3°C (RONI +2.7°C) up .2°C from last month so far. If it verifies, it will be by far the strongest El Niño on record. Thanks @hausfath for the great visual.

Still bit early for detailed forecast. But: models pointing to a classic High-Shear-Low-Cape environment on Thu. Moderately unstable air from Biscay, strong shear, both deep layer and low level, including helicity and low LCLs. Wouldn't be surprised by a few #tornados in Benelux and Germany!
Hard to believe I’m even writing this. Meteorological summer hasn’t even begun, yet Paris, France has already logged more days above 32°C than its annual average.
