This part, this part that has been the issue for so many minoritized folks for such a long fucking time is what just destroys me constantly: "I wish that 55% of my brain was not devoted to strategizing about the survival of me and of my friends." We just want to do our goofy little stuff.

Postdoc at CU Anschutz studying RNA biology, cell signaling and facial development | he/him | Black in STEM | science + random musings | https://evancbrooks.owlstown.net
We're looking for a postdoc in the Fantauzzo laboratory at CU Anschutz! If you're interested in cellular signaling and/or craniofacial developmental biology, then the project(s) in the job ad below might be a fit for you!
A NIH-funded postdoc position is available in our laboratory @cu-coms.bsky.social to study PDGFR dimer-specific dynamics in the mouse craniofacial mesenchyme. Please repost! Job description and how to apply: cu.taleo.net/careersectio...
My first paper is officially out in @currentbiology.bsky.social ! We found that snake embryos coil due to a mismatch in growth rates between the gut and spine. This tight coil is one of the reasons why snakes are able to get so long. Read the paper here!
the guy who said he wanted to chair the harvard department of eugenics and race science??? people are signing a letter in support of his right to bully black men to death in pursuit of his dream of eliminating black people entirely?? just making sure i’m reading this right!!
There’s a petition signed by more than one hundred academics (& counting!) in support of Nathan Cofnas—the racist who instigated the pile on that led to J. Arday’s death—because he lost his postdoc. Apparently there’s nothing a white man can do that deserves consequences.

We’re recruiting a postdoc to follow up on an astonishing number of mutants with craniofacial phenotypes from our ENU mutagenesis screen. Great opportunity for someone interested in developmental genetics, craniofacial biology, mouse genetics & gene discovery. Please share!
One of the genuinely crazy things about modern crocodiles is that far from being a primordial relic, they're actually as specialized and distinct in their lifestyle compared to their ancestors as birds are, if not more so
(The actual article is cool, the argument is that back in the Triassic when archosaurs split into the croc line and the dinosaur/bird line, the shared ancestral animal was warm-blooded like birds, and that croc cold-bloodedness was evolved rather than inherited) phys.org/news/2026-08...
Archosaurian evolution is so freaking cool omg (saying this as someone who did my PhD research on a naturally occurring avian embryo that developed teeth during its embryonic development)

Of course this RFI drops late on Friday. NIH proposes to stop providing specific scores and instead bin grants into 3 broad categories: most competitive, competitive, not discussed. A score would be calculated but not provided to the PI (or PO). grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

There's actually research on this and it involves scrutiny. If you're Black people are going to look at your work looking for mistakes in a way they would never for white people.
Black Workers Really Do Need to Be Twice as Good
African American employees tend to receive more scrutiny from their bosses than their white colleagues, meaning that small mistakes are more likely to be caught, which over time leads to worse perform...

let's be real: plagiarism scandals in academia happen all the time (not because academics plagiarize a lot, but just because of how many millions of faculty there are around the world) and it is never general-public news unless the culprit is a member of a minority.
New Substack from @27unihted.bsky.social just dropped breaking down decreases in NIH funding by institute and PI race. TL;DR biggest decreases in funding between 2024-2025 are for Black and Latino scientists
Disparities in success rates at NIH: inequality across institutes, race, and more
To date in FY26, awards by month for all extramural grants are following the same trajectory as in FY25 with only about two months remaining in the fiscal year

Reminder that there is actual scientific research debunking the claim that trans women have any advantages in sports. But it’s not like SCOTUS cares; they just want to be hateful. 🧪
'There's no reason to ban us from playing': Analysis debunks notion that transgender women have inherent physical advantages in sports
A meta-analysis of 52 studies that included over 5,000 transgender people suggests that transgender women's physical fitness after hormone therapy is comparable to that of cisgender women.

The fact that this was nowhere near an unanimous decision is further proof that America cannot have a multiracial, multicultural democracy if the United States Supreme Court is allowed to continue to exist in its current form
Final #SCOTUS ruling is birthright citizenship. For a 6-3 majority (Thomas, Alito & Gorsuch, dissenting), Chief Justice Roberts *strikes down* President Trump's executive order purporting to limit which individuals born in the United States would automatically be US citizens; preserves status quo:
I just got back from serving as a course assistant for @cshlcourses.bsky.social "Mouse Development, Stem Cells & Cancer" course for the 2nd time. It's amazing how much I learned, even though I was in a "teaching" position - showing that there is always more to learn in mouse development!
Final student photos from the Mouse Development, Stem Cells & Cancer course @cshlcourses.bsky.social! IF of E14.5 skin (left) and face (right) stained with Col4 (yellow/green), phalloidin (magenta/orange), Ecad (green/pink). Images taken by students @negberry.bsky.social and @drmaolsz.bsky.social.

A lot of white people learned about the Tuskegee experiment during the pandemic and believe that is the reason Black people don't trust the medical establishment. This is not true. Black people don't trust the medical establishment because the Tuskegee experiment is not an outlier.
Two Black families whose children died after they were used as test subjects in a vaccine trial without their parents’ consent have sued the federal government. Sample tissues from the boys’ autopsies were stolen to develop the RSV vaccine that is now used around the world.
