I came across an arrangement of words describing a movie as “The Purge but as a romcom” and made the mistake of googling the movie in question. One night a year people are allowed to have premarital sex???? Straight people are never beating the allegations. ANY of the allegations.

Brb gotta go inside and brag to my wife that the author of the Murderbot Diaries liked my anti-AI post. Love those books so much, @marthawells.com, wish certain fictional anti-corporate found family machines were the only AI we had to deal with right now.

What a lovely afternoon I just spent sorting hundreds of thousands of facts! I'm always surprised by how joyless AI boosters are. Historical research is FUN precisely because it is not a data retrieval exercise. Why outsource something rewarding and pleasurable to a machine?

"History involves sorting and organizing hundreds of thousands of facts" I remain astounded by how loud and wrong people are about what history actually is.

I haven't heard people talking about this, but AI is an absolute game changer for doing historical research. History involves sorting and organizing hundreds of thousands of facts— a massive logistical/memory problem made so delightfully easy with agentic research. 1/

I did an OCR conversion of all my PDFs to make text files, built a semantic search index, and can just let my agents roam free to answer questions, fact-check, dig up interesting stories, quotes, etc. It takes a lot of the hard work out, as well as a lot of the human error. 2/2

It's Wednesday, & you're wondering: "What were the smallest, & the largest, annual eel-rent in 12th C. England?" Well, I'm here to help! The smallest was 22 eels, from Hoddeston, for Sir Geoffrey Mandeville. The largest was 75,000 eels, from Harmston, for Earl Hugh of Chester. 🗃️🧪

Meme. Colored drawing of premodern-looking people wading knee and hip deep in a stream with nets and traps. There are 10 people in the water, and 2 in a boat pulling up a heavy net. There is some serious fishing going on here; they all look quite intent. It's not explicitly clear that they are fishing for eels; in fact, one of the men is holding a fish in the net that looks like it has a non-eel-like tail. But also, several of them are holding what look like wicker eel traps. So who knows? The best bet is that the artist had no idea.

We can imagine that this is a scene from 1483, and that these are villagers catching silver eels during their downstream migration. It's a party, and they are all happy (despite their seriousness). Beyond being delighted over their catch, they are thrilled at a deep level to know that YOU won't have any of their eels. They love to fish, but hate to share.

Get your own eels, gentle reader.

Meme text reads:

75,000 owed to Hugh fish"

There are over 800 people sleeping on the streets of DC (& that’s a lowwwwball estimate). Almost all of them are Black & from DC. But we’re spending hundreds of millions & making exceptions for the occupying military force so they can continue to terrorize our neighbors.
